Anything but despicable

On July 3, 2013, children and adults of all ages lined up at their local theatres, anxious to see the sequel to their primarily beloved film, Despicable Me.

Despicable Me 2 follows up the first film with a bit of a plot twist.  For those who have not seen the first film, Gru, voiced by Steve Carell, was a sorry excuse for an evil villain.  Therefore he hatched an evil plan to make him the most famous villain in the world.  For this task to succeed, he adopted three orphans, Margo, voiced by Miranda Cosgrove, Edith, voiced by Dana Gaier, and Agnes, voiced by Elsie Fisher.  Over time, Gru and the children’s bond grew stronger and he realized that the villain act must be dropped, and instead, took over the full time job as a father.

In the second movie, the same characters return, though with a few much needed additions.  Lucy, voiced by Kristen Wiig, acts as a potential love interest and is part of a society that will enable the plot for the rest of the movie.  Eduardo/ El Macho, voiced by Benjamin Bratt, plays the role of a suspected villain.  In this movie, Gru encounters career conflicts, love conflicts, and conflicts with his own children, all contributing to the hilarious though common happy ending of all animated children’s movies.

The common favorite characters of both of the movies, though not human, nor do they speak any type of comprehensible language, is the Minions.  Round, yellow, kind-hearted, and adorable alien looking creatures with overalls stole the hearts of Despicable Me fans throughout the globe.  These creatures act as Gru’s ‘helpers’.  The Minions add humor and mischief to the film, and create a more child like atmosphere.

The audience members in the the theatre were literally ‘LOL-ing’ the entire movie.

According to the box office report, Despicable Me 2 has been in the number 1 spot since its release for the second week in a row.

A spin-off film, Minions, focusing mainly on Gru’s yellow henchmen before they have met, is set to be released on December 19, 2014.

“The movie was so funny.  If people liked the first movie they will love the second one,” said senior, Will Duley.
