American Horror Story: Coven, twists, turns and turmoils, New Season leaves viewers wide eyed and gaping

“All monsters are human.” The creepy words that make viewers reevaluate everything they’ve ever considered ‘scary’.

Set in modern day New Orleans, American Horror Story: Coven, follows the lives of witches who struggle to keep their identities a secret. 300 years after the Salem Witch Trials, the youngest girls are being trained to keep their secret and still go through everyday life. With multiple stories happening at once, this show has something for everyone.

From the witch who reincarnated a dead teenage boy, just so they could be together, to the jealous supreme witch who killed the successor, there is never a dull moment. Although some would classify this kind of television as morbid, others find it completely fascinating.

“In school we learn to analyze thematic connections, repeated images and motifs and if you approach ‘AHS’ with an analytical mind frame, you can appreciate the genius behind the show”, said senior Lane Wisnom.

American Horror Story is the perfect kind of creepy. From the opening credits to the closing scenes audiences are always on high alert. Just the theme song itself is enough to scare any average person. The show has so many twists and turns that the viewers never see coming. Its almost as if the writers play off of what viewers expect to happen and then do the exact opposite. At the end of each episode the audience is left with a million questions.

“I have stopped trying to guess what’s going to happen because I usually end up wrong”, said Wisnom.

Not only the plot of the show is entertaining but the cinematography and background of the show are also enticing.

In addition to the setting being in present day, there are often flashbacks to previous historical events such as the Salem Witch Trials. The show is loosely based on events that have happened in the past, like the witch trials (season three) or the infamous story of Nellie Bly, the female journalist who feigned insanity in order to report on the cases inside mental institutions in 1887 (season two).

With season 3 premiering just before Halloween, this isn’t the first time audiences have seen these characters. Many famous faces have made an appearance such as Emma Roberts and Kathy Bates. However, you never know when your favorite character is going to die and never be seen again.

Most of the actors in Coven have also appeared in seasons one and two of American Horror Story. However, this show is different from other series’ because every season, a new story is started. While the actors are still the same, they play different characters.

For example, Jessica Lange plays Fiona in season three but in season one she played Constance Langdon and in season two she was Sister Jude.

“I love her [Jessica Lange] because she exhibits such a wide range and charismatic manner on the show.” said Wisnom.

Each season starts a completely new story and none of the seasons relate to each other. This is good for new viewers because this means that they don’t have to see any other season in order to understand what’s happening in the current episodes.

Viewers can catch American Horror Story every Wednesday night at 10pm on FX.

“I don’t have a lot of time to watch television but I make watching this show a priority”, said Wisnom.
