Being Unfriended is so last year

Recently, a trailer for the movie Unfriended has been circulating through social media sites. It’s a horror thriller film that “redefines ‘found footage’ for a new generation of teens” reports IMDb.

“I saw the trailer on twitter,” said junior Savannah Testerman. “I saw a lot of people tweeting about it and retweeting the video. It looks really cool.”

According to ScreenCrush, the movie is about how a popular high school girl, Laura, had an embarrassing video of her passed out at a party posted online for everyone to see. Her bullying was so severe that she committed suicide. A year later, six of her classmates were on Skype and an unknown user logged on to Laura’s Skype. The unknown user threatens that if anyone logs off, someone will die. Soon the truth come out about who posted the video and friendships were put to the test.

The trailer alone was full of gore and thrill and caught many peoples eyes.

“I’m really excited for this movie to come out,” said junior Kelly Harkins. “Cyberbullying is a hot topic right now so it’s cool that they can use a serious topic in a horror film.”

Although social media has recently been blowing up about the “new” horror film Unfriended, it is not so new. The original film was Cybernatural and was released to theaters in July 20, 2014. Its world premiere took place at Fantasia Festival. Afterwards, the producer, Levan Gabriadze had Universal Pictures pick up their film rights to give it a wider audience.

“I had no idea it had already had a world premiere,” said junior Cole Mathews. “It’s weird. I’ve never heard of a movie being sold and re-premiered.”

The movie received many good reviews and got a rating of 7.4 out of 10. Twitch Film said it was an “interesting look at modern methods of communication and the ramifications of the new normal of always-on social interaction.”

Dread Central also praised the movie but said “the fashion in which we are trafficked to each scare- through multi-screen clicking, copying, pasting and re-sizing, basically all-around multi-tasking. It can be trying to sit through and I liken it to sitting over someone’s shoulder watching them web-surf… endlessly.”

Although the movie has already had many reviews, on April 17, 2015, viewers will be able to write their own reviews. It is possible that the ratings can change after its second release.
