Art guild makes changes

Those with an eye for detail may have noticed that the Art Guild has a new and improved focus this year.

“Art guild is a chance for folks to get more experience outside the daily school day,” explains art techer Mr. Jason Blevins. Blevins and fellow teacher Mrs. Kathryn Humphrey are in charge of this club.  Currently the club has 30 people have signed up.

The members of the art guild are already hard at work at designing and creating the backdrop for the school play The Sound of Music.

“We are making a real effort to be consistent and be more out there, we want to get the word out that Art Guild is doing things,” says Blevins. The members in Art Guild meet Wednesdays after school and even some Saturdays. “Depending on what we are working on it will vary,” says Blevins.

“It’s enrichment, it’s about doing things connected to the community, instead of just a grade,” Blevins explains as to why students should join.

Chloe Leed, a senior at North Harford, is one the members in Art Guild for the first time this year. She has always taken art classes, but this is her first year participating the club. “I joined Art Guild because it was a good opportunity to be a part of something that shows off our school and really benefits the North Harford community. It’s also a chance to work in groups to form a piece of art instead of working individually like I was normally used to,” says Leed.

Leed is especially excited to be creating the backdrop for the fall musical. “I personally have admired the work our artists have put into it. It is not a simple task, it is quite impressive and takes a tremendous amount of work and effort… The backdrop is enormous! It is 12 by 48 feet!” exclaims Leed.

The members of Art guild have already started painting and right now there are different groups that are sectioned to different parts of the back drop. Everyone will switch around to different parts of the backdrop over time.

“Art Guild is such a different type of club. There is an incredible amount of creativity and freedom that goes into it, and the work created by these artists is stunning,” Leed claims.

When asked why people should join this club Leed explained,“By being involved in this kind of setting you can learn how to become a better listener, and a better artist as you learn from those around you.”
