A word from the president; setting goals for a new year

The Student Government Association, or SGA, has been a part of schools for a number of years. It is designed to give students a voice. “My plans for this year are to increase North Harford’s participation in the county student government and the state,” said Executive board President Hannah Herron.

“At the moment we are doing our freshman elections so we are trying to find freshmen that are interested in participating, increasing their leadership skills, and building up their college resume,” said the senior.  “I want North Harford to have a stronger SGA, so that means having people who are willing to work hard to benefit the school and the community.”

Herron adds that the SGA has been helping the middle school get started with an SGA, “I also have been working with the middle school to start a student government program with them. We are making some progress, and the middle school should be having their elections at the end of September.”

“For the county, we are planning on doing more charity programs and outreach. We are scheduling a soup kitchen night to work at the resource one shelter,” said Herron.   According her, the state charity of the year is the Maryland food bank, so North Harford and the county are going to be doing more food drives, food competitions to raise funds and food for the Maryland food bank.

Herron states that she wants to have more student involvement and more general meetings. The organization had its first GA on September 7 where they ratified their constitution, and had a roundtable workshop to hear the viewpoints from students on some current issues going on in the school

“I also would like to personally talk in front of the Board of Education again on the importance of teachers and teachers salaries. It’s so important that we have teachers being paid well and stay in the county, because we already lost, just from our school, five teachers… it’s important to keep our good teachers here because without our good teachers we don’t have good students,” says Herron.

Herron goes to say that she needs help to accomplish these goals “I can’t do this all alone so I have a great team of people that are going to help me along the way. Our executive board is outstanding this year they have been so helpful, and I know with their help we can get a lot done.”

Herron commented that there are some fun activities that students can go to as well, “including Homecoming, Hawk Stock, and the talent show and even more… We are going to have a food drive amongst the classes, and the class that wins is going to get a prize.”
