Smilko sets sail; Former Mariner joins Hawks

Mrs. Dana Smilko is no stranger to Harford County.  A graduate of Joppatowne HS, Smilko has made her way to NH beginning in the 2016-17 school year.

Smilko Is a graduate from Towson University and has been hired as a teacher at NH beginning this year. The new staff member works with the special ed department.  “I technically teach special ed, but I teach different content areas, math, English, and science,” said Smilko.  “I like all of those subjects.  I’m not the best at the higher levels, but I enjoy teaching those subjects.” She continues that she “likes teaching science classes” the most.

Smilko added that this is her first year of teaching and she commented that NH has “a beautiful campus.”  She says she finds “the school environment is so supportive; everyone that I work with is just really supportive. The students seem to be that way so far as well.”

As as a high school student at Joppatowne, she was a part of National Honors Society and Spanish Honor Society along with a few other organizations including athletic teams.   “I used to play soccer and swimming in high school.” Though her high school team was not super successful, she is still considering coaching the Hawks this year.
