College Cliches

Special shoutout to seniors: it’s that time of the year for the graduating class when acceptance and rejection letters are coming in. For those who applied to several schools, every day feels Russian roulette when you open the mailbox.

I (stupidly) just applied to one college: Towson. To any underclassmen who are ready for college planning, I strongly suggest not to do this. I knew that was the only school that met my requirements and was a good fit for me. It was make or break when I saw the TU logo in the stack of letters. It was a mixture of sweet relief and pride when I read the words, you’re in. I know Towson isn’t Harvard or Yale, but that moment I felt accomplished. Like the last 12 years of my life haven’t been a waste after all. School does make you smarter, how about that. It’s a moment everyone should feel at some point in their lifetime.

There’s no shame in getting rejected from schools either. It just wasn’t meant to be. You’ll feel disappointed for sure but never let yourself feel defeated. You took a risk that didn’t work out. That only exhibits your motivation. That college wasn’t where you are meant to be, and now you are only that much stronger.

No matter where you decide to go after graduation, may it be HCC, JMU, the Coast Guard or a full-time job, you should excited about your decision, not just content.

Another piece of advice: apply for any and all scholarships that you’re eligible for. I know it’s a pain, all the work involved for a $400 scholarship, but they add up. It’s free money! There’s all sorts of weird and unusual scholarships out there too; you don’t have to be an exceptional student to be eligible.

Also, just because you are 100% sure you want to major in Psychology, dont be afraid to take a mixture of classes, explore your interests. According to nbc.com, students that declare their major change it 50% of the time.

As for campus life: get involved, join a few clubs, step out of your comfort zone. Open yourself up to new people.
It’s a new and exciting time, don’t waste it.
