After surveying around 150 students at lunch about their favorite movie genre, the results varied. Despite the variety of grade levels polled, there is one genre that seemed popular with everyone: horror.
The horror movie genre won by a landslide of votes and some ninth grade students agreed that horror movies were the best genre because these kinds of films get their blood and adrenaline pumping. They also commented that it is fun to “get scared every once and awhile.”
“Horror movies are scary and thrilling and give me anxiety. The best parts of horror movies are when ghosts pop out or when you know something scary is there,” said freshman Kayla Gorrell. “My favorite horror movie is The Conjuring. At first I couldn’t finish it because I was so scared, but I finished it later.”
The second most voted for movie genre was Disney movies. This should come as no surprise especially with Frozen being released a couple months ago. According to online sources, this film has been recognized as the most successful animated movie of all time. According to buzzfeed.com, “Frozen surpassed The Lion King as the top grossing animated film… it became Disney’s first animated film to win an Academy Award… along with an Oscar for Best Original Song.”
Finally, the third most popular movie genre was divided between comedies and romantic comedies. Both of these types of movies make people feel good and laugh, but ‘Rom-Coms’, they can get a little more emotional. The majority of the votes for Rom-Com’s were from the girls. These types of movies are also extremely relatable, especially teens for all of the emotions and memories they are going through.
The movies that did not do so well include: Sci/Fi, action, super heroes, cartoon, adventure, historical fiction, documentary, and drama.
