Spring Sports 2015: Preview of the upcoming spring season

Baseball
With the success of last year’s baseball team still fresh in fans’ minds, everyone better get their peanuts and ballcaps ready because this year’s team has intentions of going all the way to the championship.

Carrying one sophomore, four juniors, and twelve seniors, social studies teacher and head coach Mr. Tim Larrimore plans on taking his team to states this year, and has faith in his team’s ability to do so.

“My expectations are high, we have a great team and hopefully we will win this year,” said Larrimore.

Returning senior Scott Angstadt said, “One goal, one team, states here we come. I suggest everybody comes out and supports us. We would all really appreciate it.”

The team has done a lot of offseason work with fundamentals and they have been hitting a lot, preparing to dominate. Larrimore hopes for no injuries or anything that could possibly sacrifice their chance to bring back the state title. The season officially hit the bases March 17, taking on Kennard-dale.

“I think we are going to do really well this season, we just had our first game and figured out we have a lot to work on,” said senior Bobby Burton.

Softball

This year, the softball team is aiming to be extremely competitive and to challenge every team regardless of who they are and where they are from.

“This year’s team is a mix of freshmen, a good core group of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, who complement each other very well,” said assistant coach Julio Fernandez.

This years team consists of twelve experienced and well trained girls, who hit it off at tryouts and blend well together as a team.

“We have a good group of girls. I really enjoyed tryouts and I am looking forward to seeing how this season goes.” Said Fernandez.

“We are planning to have a very successful season and to be very competitive.” Said head coach (not sure of mrs. bice’s first name) Bice, on her outlook for this seasons team.

From the tough tryouts and hard training, the girls and coaches are looking forward to this upcoming season and what it holds for them.

“Between figure skating on slick gym floors to field a ground ball and trying not to whack the girl next to you with a bat, it was a little cramped during tryouts. We still persevered and so far the team is having a great time together. We can’t wait to get outside and play for real,” said senior Alexis Lyttle.

Boys Lacrosse

Although delayed due to snow, the boys lacrosse team is preparing for a victorious spring season led by head coach Brady Green. After a successful 2014 season, the entire team and coaching staff have high hopes for the upcoming spring season.

Many tryouts were held inside as a result of poor field conditions but according to many lacrosse players the tryouts went well despite the weather and field situation.

“Tryouts went the best they could with the conditions we faced due to the weather. It would’ve been nice to get on the field more,” senior Michael Green stated.

Senior goalie Cameron Brosh has been a member of the varsity lacrosse team since his freshman year. For his final season of high school lacrosse, he is hoping to win regionals and have a family-oriented team.

The team is mostly composed of juniors and seniors, but a select few underclassmen have earned their spot on varsity.

“The underclassmen that made varsity have a lot of skill and will help the team out, they have been earning their spot on varsity,” Green stated.

North Harford graduate Vince Johnson is assisting with coaching this year. As a certified professional trainer, he is trying putting the team through some of the “toughest conditioning” according to Brosh. Brosh anticipates the team to be in great shape for the season which will lead to a more successful spring season.

Girls Lacrosse

With a successful 2014 season under their belts, and tryouts just finishing after the second week of March , the girls lacrosse team already has high expectations for this upcoming season. With the loss of 12 seniors last year, many talented shoes will need to be filled. But with 20 girls on this season’s team and lots of skill waiting to be shown on the field, it won’t be a difficult task for these girls to tackle.

With only five seniors on the team and 20 total members, the girls will be a tight knit team and not only rely on each other on the field but off as well. With a strong defensive and offensive team, the girls plan to further develop their skills and win as many games and tournaments as they can this upcoming season. Captains have not yet been chosen and the team will now rely on the leadership of the senior members of the team until the captains are selected. With C. Milton Wright,  Bel Air, and Fallston being their biggest competitors, the girls look forward to playing these games and keeping a solid record throughout the season. After winning their first scrimmage against Towson, the girls are looking forward to a successful season. Later this month the girls will facing Hereford in an important of county match up.

Tennis

After Harford County accumulated nearly 10 inches of snow during the first week of tryouts, the tennis team was determined to make it through what really seemed like winter sports part two.

For the first time in head coach Wendy Feight’s tennis career, the entire tryout process was held indoors. Forced to use foam balls in place of real ones, they also had to tape the boundary lines and wrap caution tape around chairs for a net.

“With 60 kids, it was a bit nuts. So just being outside on an actual tennis court with real tennis balls is great,” said Feight.

This year, the team has 13 returning players.

“We have a lot of great players returning, along with some kids who moved up from JV. We had a strong finish to our season last year, so we are looking forward to building on that and having another successful season,” said Feight.

Their first game of the season will be against Patterson Mill, but it will be played at Harford Community College.
“I think we’ll do well. We have a lot of new players, so it’ll be interesting to see how we do, but I’m confident in our team,” said senior Adam Parks.

Their most looked forward to match will be against Fallston on April 16, and according to Feight, it would be the best match to come out and support the tennis team.

“It’s always a competitive match. Ever since I’ve been coaching here, it’s been competitive, and I don’t want to look ahead on a schedule but it’s a match we all look forward to,” said Feight.

“It’d be great to beat them,” said Parks. “They’ve been undefeated the last two years and it’d be great if we handed them a long overdue loss. Plus, we’d appreciate it if the fans came out. We need any home field advantage we can get.”

Track and Field

Towards the end of the 2014 track and field season, the team won regionals and broke a school record during states. With having such success last year, the team has high expectations for this spring.

“The season is going great so far. We have already began to work hard and set high goals,” said senior Regan Davis. “It is different from previous seasons though because we have all new coaches.”

Coaches Josh Korbec, Miak Fronte, Jimmy Cacholla, Ryan and Laura Bayne are all looking forward to this season and getting to know the team.

“We’re kind of starting from scratch this season,” said sophomore Courtney Klapka. “But they are doing a great job of organizing the team.”

Although the girls team is considerably larger than the boys, the team as a whole is bigger than ever. According to Klapka, the team is very “young.” There are returners but the team mostly consists of new runners.

Despite all the changes, the team is excited for the season to start.

“I’m looking forward to bonding with the team,” said Davis. “It’s a great group of people and I wouldn’t want to spend my last high school season with any other team.”
