Cheerleading attacks mat with new season

Though the season is just starting, the cheerleading team has been hard at work, putting their routine together for upcoming competitions in January.

With weekend practices, clinics at all-star gyms, and practice everyday, the team already has most of the routine down.

Though tryouts were weeks ago, the people who could not tryout were quickly replaced and are now working hard with the returning cheerleaders and focusing on technique, strength, and team communication to get the routine finished.

Junior manager Kayla Dellone offers helpful eyes to the coach and team members throughout practices giving advice, and helps coaching as well as helping coach Emily Hilberg with music and positions. “Everyone on the team is really motivated and willing to try new things. They have to continue being motivated and dedicated to the team if they want to be successful,” states Dellone.

Senior captain Ligaya Corpuz has been cheering for all eight seasons at NH and believes we have never had such complicated stunts. A level one stunt is the most basic and easiest stunt a team can do, compared to a level five stunt which is one of the most complicated and difficult ones to learn. “We’ve been working on high level stunts. Most of the stunts are level four or five and very difficult, but, we work through it as a team, keep an open mind, and accomplish the stunts and overall routine as a team,” said Corpuz.

Though cheerleading only has three to four invitational competitions, they are merely just practice for counties, semi-states finals, and states. Preparing is not easy, it requires dedication, team cooperation, and a lot of patience and hard work to place at counties and continue on to semi-state finals.

Senior captain Mikayla Baselice is very excited for this season with the new team. “I’m excited to put everything in the routine together because we’ve been working so hard on a lot of new stunts that are hard to do. But we’ve also been very optimistic and determined to make everything work and i think that’s the best part about this season.”
