Fumbling their scores; UMD fails to make top 25 in B1G conference

The Maryland Terrapins surprised fans when Edsall’s 2014 Terps finished their regular season with a 7–5 record, comprising a 4–4 record in Big Ten Conference play that put them third in the Big Ten East Division. Though Maryland was a lot better last year, Penn State and Michigan had huge down seasons and the Terps beat both teams on the road. However, this season was a complete blowout.

The Terps did terrible; not only did they lose every game but three, every loss they had was monumental. The West Virginia game was a 45-6 loss, 24-7 against Michigan State, 28-0 against Michigan. The Terrapins weren’t even close enough to score a field goal in any of the games.

Maryland has the worst quarterback rating of any Power Five conference team in the Football Bowl Subdivision, according to ESPN.com.  This is a tremendous statistic given the previous experience of upperclassmen  Perry Hills, Caleb Rowe and Daxx Garman. Maryland offensive coordinator Mike Locksley was disgusted before the game against Ohio State, when the Terps still couldn’t decide between three QB’s to run plays with the game only 72 hours away.

With UMD joining the Big Ten in 2014, and as a  result they have some big expectations to live up to.  For only the second season as a part of  the conference, they are not making a good impression. The conference does not have bad teams.  Sure there is no guarantee that we can win, but come on,  out of 12 games, the best the Terps could do was win three?

It probably didn’t help that there was conflicts off the field with coaching. Michigan’s defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin  is now the new head coach for the Terps. He was attractive to Maryland because of the passion he brings to the field. His offensive plans would fit along with Ohio State’s spread power attack. Durkin is a good recruiter and is expected to promise better opportunity for Maryland’s winning streak.

For their sake, I hope that Durkin can pull his weight and get Maryland back on top. They didn’t even make top 25 week’s 9-14 of draft picks. Given the Terps had a bad coaching situation, their QB Carousel is lackluster, the division they are in seems to be too hard for them, and extra off the field issues, the Terps had a horrific season.

Regarding their offense who seems to unable to run the ball, or catch the ball for that matter, and the defense which clearly cannot block to save their life, the Terps need to do some major damage repair and climb back up to top three in the Big Ten conference.
