Student entrepreneur opens in-home cakery business

She volunteers at a therapeutic riding farm, participates in Girl Scouts, swims and plays softball.   Seventeen year old Becca Simon is now adding something to her already busy schedule:  business owner.

Bees Knees Cakery is an in-home business that specializes in making cakes, cake pops, and cupcakes. Simon caters for weddings, holiday parties, graduations, etc.

“Ever since I was a little girl I was fascinated by magnificent towering cupcakes,” said Simon.

Although it wasn’t until a year ago that she decided to put her cake making skills to the test, Simon has always loved experimenting with different types of cakes and icing. At first Simon wasn’t sure what she wanted to do, and thought of selling her cakes to fundraise for struggling cancer patients. While she would still like to do this, Simon’s more immediate plans include saving money to help her earn her “Gold award” for Girl Scouts.

Simon has already filled out her business plan, submitted it to the government, applied for tax numbers.  Simon states that she does not need to obtain a permit because her business is run inside her home.

“I would love to be a young rising entrepreneur in a demanding world,” said Simon.

Not afraid of a challenge, she plans for her business to expand, hoping it will continue when she heads off to college.

As her business kicks off this summer there should be no problem with money. Many graduations, Independence day parties, and summer festivals need catering, and “Bees Knees Cakery” will have no problem providing for those types events.
