Peeta Mellark: Smart, sweet, strong

“Sick and disoriented, I’m able to form only one thought: Peeta Mellark just saved my life.”
I don’t know about you, but saving someone’s life is a pretty big deal. For any of you who are unfamiliar with The Hunger Games, it’s a story of how a girl volunteers in her sister’s place to take part in the annual Hunger Games. This so called “game” takes 24 teenagers, puts them in an arena together, and has them fight to the death until only one remains.
If it was me, I would want a companion who would help keep me alive. Duh. Of course you would think someone like a lifelong friend would be there to help you, but Katniss’ best friend on the other hand, is not. Don’t get me wrong, Katniss is a very family-oriented kind of girl and with Gale Hawthorne to watch after her family while she’s gone, she is happy. Instead, someone Katniss does not even remember must stick by her side for this journey. That boy is none other than Peeta Mellark.
First of all, the fact that Peeta tries to be nothing but nice to Katniss, no matter how rude she is to him, says a lot. Also, it takes real courage to be reminded about her past. During their time together, Peeta reveals that he was the boy who threw Katniss bread while she sat in the pouring rain, starving. I would totally pledge my love to someone who was kind enough to save my life, or admit on national television to millions of people that he was in love with me.
Peeta has had a massive crush on Katniss since she shot her hand up to sing at their music assembly as young kids. Now, it may seem creepy for someone to watch someone else walk home every day, but the fact that Peeta has not forgotten about the same girl for that long period of time shows true love and dedication.
No one can forget the many times Peeta and Katniss had each other’s backs during the games. Though Peeta left Katniss for the strong groups at the beginning, they found each other and were inseparable ever since. Peeta saved Katniss from the tributes of District one and two, then Katniss saved Peeta after having greatly injured his leg.
Inevitably, Gale has been there for Katniss through her whole life and I can respect that. But, who is there in her greatest time of need? In a life or death situation? Who saved not only once, but twice, from death? Only one guy can live up to all of that. I’m rooting for Peeta.
