Behind the Scenes of the musical

Jordan Paul, sophomore

“I’m in Art Guild which means that I work on set design… on the posters, the designs for t-shirts and the playbill. We’re told what the backdrop has to be and we get a big canvas and paint it. I like doing [Art Guild] because I’ve always liked doing art since I was really little and because it’s something I want to do with my life.”

Jayati Sondhi, junior

“I’m in the Tech Crew and I’m doing the lightboard or spotting. I like being on Tech Crew beacuse it’s something I’m really passionate about, it’s always really fun, and it’s a really close knit friend-group.”

Kate Meagher, senior

“I’m the Stage Manager, I collect bios, ads, create the program, give people their cues, help open and close the curtain. During Tech Week, I’m behind the stage all the time with a headset talking to Mrs. Green, Ms. Jones, and the head of Tech. I also tell the Light Crew when to turn on and off lights. I really like theater, being in musicals, and working with an ensemble and being a conributing to the show so being Stage Manger allows be to do that without being on stage.”

Mr.Chuck Selfe, teacher

“I set up a lot of the technical equipment – the microphones and the lighting – so that the students of the Tech Crew can do whatever is needed to make the musical look and sound as good as it can. I like working with the technology…but more importantly I like working with the students. They take a lot of pride in what they do to try and make tjhe shows look and sound better.”

Ms. Jones, teacher

“I work with the all the singers and also work on the Pit; I play the piano and direct with my head. During the show that’s the fun but stressful part of making sure the music matches what’s going on stage and when to come in or not. [I like doing it] because it’s fun. It’s a lot of hard work but so much fun to see that final production when they are actually on stage in front of an audience. There’s just nothing like it.”

Mrs. Noe, costumer

“I love it because I get to work with the kids. I used to do shows in high school myself and it’s one of my favorite high school memories so I like being able to pass that along and pay it forward to all the people that helped with my shows. I have been sewing since I was ten years old, I’ve been sewing for a very long time so fabric and costumes are part of my genetic makeup I think. Backstage we are resonsible for making everybody look good as an ensemble. Mrs. Bridges and I are responsible for making sure that everybody looks good in the ensemble and nobody outshines anybody else, that it all makes sense, that the costumes fit the period of the show, that they’re appropriate to the show, so we make you look good.

Madame Arist, teacher

“I love doing choreography because I love to dance and I have been dancing since I was really little, since I was four or five. As I’ve gotten older this is a creative outlet for me that I love being a part of. I love love love love seeing the students on stage during the show and how far they’ve come since when we first started teaching them, to making it on the stage.”

Joe Hadaway, senior

“In tech, right now, I have a more important role, but in recent years I’ve just kind of filled in wherever it’s needed depending if it’s lights, or sound because [Win Berrell] would normally run our lights really well and Page Evans would do our sound so it depends but I kind of do everything. I like the people and being able to just have somebody that you can relate to that enjoys the same things that you do because not a lot of people are into tech, but it’s fun.”

Mrs. Jestel, teacher

“For the musical, I spend time thinking about what’s going to make the stage look interesting. We try and find movements that make the whole scene look interesting and fit the time framce and the characters that are on the stage. It’s so completely different from the science I do every day that it is a nice change up from what I do in the classroom.

Mr. Green, teacher

“My responsibilties include helping building the sets, I also, on the nights of the show, I’m in charge of the tech crew which moves all the set pieces on and off the set and help with props. Having never ever been involved in musicals or plays or anything like that in my life, and having married the drama teacher and a theater person, I learned to appreciate… being involved in atheltics all the time, seeing the similarities and team aspects of how it all comes together.”

Lynne Thomas, junior

“For the musical I am doing costuming and I love to do costuming. I have been sewing since I was eight. Since I wasn’t able to actually be in the show this year, costuming is one of the other things I enjoy doing and a way that I can contribute to the show.”
