Junior, Miles Boone is an art student at North Harford, he gets his inspiration from dreams and was first influenced by his brother. He began the school year at Edgewood High School, but transferred back to NH later this year. The picture on the right shows Miles and a piece he made at Edgewood, the assignment was to make a mind map.  He also says “I started making it, and I wanted to make a collage so I took a bunch of old drawings and sketches I had and layered them together.”Boone said he was a bit anxious in his environment and worked that into his art. Boone is a completely creative, innovative artist.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration from?

A: Mostly dreams and stuff.

Q: What types of pieces do you find yourself working with?-Subject matter

A: Either just normal drawing pencils or collages.

Q: In what tone do you do your art?

A: Kind of like that dream like, very confused like dreamy state.

Q: Do you plan on continuing your art in the future or in college?

A: Definitely in the future, I don’t know what I’m doing for college. I was thinking about going to art school, but I know I’m going to continue doing it forever.

Q: Is there a difference you plan to make in society with your artwork?

A: I really love political artists and I love people that make art with oppression and people that try to make big changes with their art, but I don’t know if I’m the same way.

Q: What challenges do you face when pursuing your art?

A: Different kinds of mediums.I hate oil pastels, we’re literally doing oil pastels right now and they’re so messy and they get everywhere and I feel like I can’t focus because it’s just getting everywhere.

Q: When did you start being interested in art and what or who influenced you?

A: This is very funny, the whole reason I actually started doing art was because of my brother. He is really really good at art and it made me mad that I wasn’t good at it. So out of spite I was like I’m going to start drawing, and I did.

Q: What three artist inspire you the most?

A: A lot of the ones that I like are contemporary, I guess. There’s this girl called Ellie Smallwood and she does these giant weird portraits and forms and stuff. And it’s very different from the kind of art I make and I love her a lot. A lot of the other artists I go towards and enjoy are artists that I know their background history, it makes their art more interesting. I don’t want to be basic but Vincent Van Gogh, learning about his psychotic breakdowns and the stuff that happened to him in his life, makes the art that you see all the time a lot more interesting.

Q: Why do you do what you do?

A: It calms me down, like drawing if I’m ever worried about something and draw it out, it helps me. And also I like making something that’s never been made before, because no matter what you do every piece of art is going to be different. And you are literally making something that has never been created and it’s like in all of human history, no one’s ever did that. Even if it’s just a weird drawing of whatever, it could be like a dog with sunglasses, it doesn’t matter like nobody’s done it, maybe they’ve done something similar but because every person can’t draw the exact same it’s different no matter what.

Q: How do you work? Environment?

A: I actually have problems when I work at school because I have a hard time getting into my mindset because it’s a really short period and I like to work in my room, in the middle of the night, listening to music and no one can bother me. That’s my favorite time to work.

Q: What role do you wish to have in society?

A: I wish I could make money by doing art and I probably could but because of the kind of art I make, people don’t really wanna buy my weird dream stuff. When you do art as a career you kind of do art to please other people, and I hate that. There’s two things, I feel like as an artist as a role could be able to be creative and sustain yourself. But on the other side if I could do anything in the world I would live in the hut in the middle of the woods or something.

Miles on his art:
Well, I started off this school year at Edgewood and then came back. But we had to make a mind map, or like an art spread or something like that. But you had to incorporate what’s in your mind, what you think about, if you had colors. That wasn’t given, that was just what I was thinking about. The first thing that came to mind to me, that day I was very anxious, because it was one of the first days, I had no idea where I was going. But most of my anxiety wasn’t about that. It was just that kind of environment made me very anxious. So I started making it, and I wanted to make a collage so I took a bunch of old drawings and sketches I had and layered them together. And I started thinking about imagery that I find interesting and I always like antlers, I just like the way they look. But I kind of combined things that I like the way they look and the things I think and the thoughts I have.
