Running out of heat

August; the month of scorching hot days, fun in the sun, and before school beach trips. Or is it? August, 2013 does not seem to be playing by the rules of Mother Nature.

Summer has not been much of a “summer” this year, every other day the weather consists of gloomy skies and rain storms. August is usually a heat packed month, letting kids soak up as much sun as they can before school starts. But Mother Nature has other plans. Dropping temperatures as low as 50 degrees cause people to whip out sweatshirts and turn off their air conditioning a month or two too early.

This sudden drop of temperature is exciting news for some of Maryland’s runners. August 15; 1,557 athletes ran a 12 mile course from Towson to the Inner Harbor. In the Women’s bracket Megan McNew, former North Harford student took first place with a time of 1:17:37. Taking first place in the Men’s bracket was Jesse Jaeger from New Jersey. Over 10 percent of the people competing in this race were locals from Harford County, many from Bel Air High School, and a few students from North Harford and Fallston as well.

Over 20 athletes from Harford County have competed in races all over Maryland and Delaware, all placing within the top 50. Many of those people have competed in Multiple races throughout the summer and will continue to compete in these upcoming August events; River Valley 10K trail, 45 Annual RASAC, Camp Hidden Valley 5K

During the summer months people tend to not be as active as they are during fall or spring. especially when the temperature ranges from 80 degrees to 107. people choose to stay out of the sun and where there is plenty of water, so they do not die of heat exhaustion or dehydration. Its those problems that usually keep numerous people from competing in events such as marathons and 5K’s.
