Second biggest shopping week arrives again

It’s that time of year where all procrastinating students start their summer work and get to Walmart for all the school supplies they need. After endless hours of reading, the only thing that can excite anyone going back to school is getting a new wardrobe to start off the year and tax free shopping for a whole week definitely fuels that desire.

For the week of August 11 through August 17, Marylanders can hit the shops and buy their back-to-school clothes and shoes with no tax included. That means everything priced under $100 will be exempt from the six percent sales tax. But, unlike Virginia, Maryland’s tax free week does not include school supplies which some think isn’t right.

Families with more than one kid have other priorities than new clothes for everything. But, without taxes, families with a few kids can save an upwards of $80.

Tax free shopping definitely attracts more people to businesses. This is because they pay exactly what they see on the price tag. Knowing this, it also might entice people to spend more because they are able to figure out their end price before even getting to the cash register. That is very appealing to anyone who’s about fashion. Going back to school in style is important to some people and this week in Maryland is their jackpot.

Some retailers call this “Christmas in August” because it has become the second biggest shopping week of the year. This week even attracts consumers from Delaware and Pennsylvania to spend money in Maryland.

Along with all the typical clothes shops, sports shops’ business can go up 25%-40% during this week. North Harford always shows pride when it comes to the Ravens and Purple Fridays are the time to do that. So tax free shopping through Ravens apparel isn’t a bad deal.
