Clubs and Organizations Overview

  1. Academic Team (Advisor: Mr. Blake)
  2. The Academic Team prepares for academic competitions and is open to all students, especially people who like to play Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit.

  • “We will be doing a competition on September 24 on an academic TV show. Anyone is welcome to come by [if they would like to join],” says sponsor Mr. Russell Blake.

  • Students are always welcome to join and we will work around athletic practice for the students who are on a sports team. See room Mr. Blake in room D307; meetings are from 2:15-3:15

 

 

  1. Art Guild (Advisor: Mr. Blevins)

  2. The Art Guild promotes art appreciation and enjoyment throughout the school community and provides scholarships to graduating art students.

  3. “We’re going to be working with the drama club to build set designs and we plan to do the tye dye T-Shirts again and selling them at Earth day. We have several other plans that are in works that are classified,” states sponsor, Mr. ___ Blevins.

  4. Students may see any art teacher or Art Guild officer to join. Come to the first meeting.

 

  1. Best Buddies (Advisor: Mrs. Crawford-Smick and Mrs. Ege)

  2. Best Buddies offers general education students the opportunity to develop friendships with other students who have disabilities.

  3. “My plans for Best Buddies are to help the program grow and to do more in school and outside of school activities and spread the word about acceptance throughout the school,” explains sponsor Mrs. Christie Crawford.

  4. Students may stop by room B220 and C200 to pick up an application during Hawks Soar. Students can also complete an on-line application at .bestbuddiesonline.org

 

  1. Chess Club (Advisor:  Mrs. Chandler)

  2. The Chess Club is an opportunity for students to learn and p

  3. To expand membership and enthusiasm about the art of chess and checkers.

  4. Students may see Mrs. Chandler in room D207 to fill out a card or come to the first meeting.

 

  1. International Thespian Society (Advisor:  Mrs. Green)

  2. Students prepare and perform a play.

  3. To put on performances throughout the school year.

  4. Auditions are at the beginning of the school year. See Mrs. Green in the Black Box Theater, A222.

 

  1. Envirothon (Advisor:  Mrs. O’Leary)

  2. The Envirothon is an academic environmental team that competes on a countywide level.

  3. “Envirothon is an academic team and my plan is to win!” says sponsor, Mrs. Laura O’Leary.

  1. Future Farmers  of America (Advisors: Mrs. Densmore, Mrs. Woodward, Ms. Edwards or Mr. Thomas.)

  2. FFA is a national organization. We work with our community on education in agriculture and compete in agriculture events on state and national levels.

  3. “We have Food for America coming up when we teach 2nd graders about Ag. We are going to the National Convention in October, competing in a bunch of career development events and tractor which is in a conjunction again on April 21st. We’re also attending the FFA state convention in June,” comments sponsor Mrs. Densmore.

  4. Students complete an application and pay $15.00 dues each year. Pick up applications from your sponsor Mrs. Densmore, Mrs. Woodward, Ms. Edwards or Mr. Thomas.

 

  1. French Club (Advisor:  Mdm Reynard)

  2. The French Club celebrates French culture with holiday parties and trips to a restaurant in Baltimore and a film festival in Virginia.

  3. “We’re going to have a lot of different parties for holidays and a road clean up on 165… booth at homecoming and try to spread awareness about the French culture,” details president Elizabeth Eakes.

  1. Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) (Advisor: Mrs. Bridges)

  2. FBLA will provide you with career preparations, leadership development, community service, friendship, fun, scholarships, challenging competitions, outstanding conferences and much more.

  3. “We have the inductions of officers on September 28… and on the 23rd and 30th of October, we’re going to be helping at a camp for little kids as community service. On November 2nd, we’ll be going to a Fall Leadership Conference at Hunt Valley , Maryland, which the whole state attends. There’s the Regional competitions on the Eastern short in January and in March we’ll attend the leadership conference with the entire state,” states sponsor Mrs. Bridges.

  4. Students complete an application and pay $14.00 dues per year. Must be a member to attend meetings. Pick up applications in business classes or from Mrs. Bridges.

 

  1. Future Educators of America (FEA) (Advisor:  Mrs. Knisely)

  2. Members will experience the duties of a classroom teacher at a feeder elementary school from 2:15-3:30pm, one day a week throughout the school year or as requested by the elementary cooperating teacher. Additional services or activities conducted by the club will be designed to help members learn more about the profession of teaching, support area children and their families, and to support the faculty and staff at North Harford High School.

  3. “We have our members be put with teachers in elementary school after North Harford High School’s day has ended, around 2:15-3:30. Members will work with an elementary school teacher on whichever level they choose on weekly basis in an area of school, like North Ben, Jarrettsville Dublin, etc.,” explains sponsor Mrs. Knisely.

  4. In September see Mrs. Knisely in Room D101 for an application.

 

  1. German Club (Sponsor: Mr. Blake)

  2. Various aspects of German culture will be made available to students (i.e., dancing, singing, festivals) through the German Club.

  3. “We will be doing something in October and December for Christmas, something around Valentine’s day and Spring fest,” says sponsor Mr. Russell Blake.

  4. German students will be notified (sometimes by course level) if and when they are to meet.

 

  1. LOVERS OF RECYCLING AND XYLEM (L.O.R.A.X.)  (Advisor:  Mrs. O’Leary)

  2. The L.O.R.A.X. Club provides an opportunity for students to pursue interests in animal life and ecology. The club obtains guest speakers, prepares showcases and plans field trips.

  3. “In L.O.R.A.X., I need a group of strong, solid leaders to get a handle on our solid waste sustainability of North Harford,” states sponsor Mrs. O’Leary.

  1. Spanish Club (ADVISOR:  Mrs. Rake)

  2. The Spanish Club celebrates the cultures and practices of the many Spanish-speaking countries. We sample foods, dances, holidays, and share such experiences with others

  3. “We always plan parties for Day of the Dead, Cinco de Mayo and Christmas,” details sponsor Mrs. Rake.

  1. Speech and Debate/Forensics (Advisor:  Mrs. Joanna Dallam)

  2. The NHHS Speech and Debate Team participates in competitions within the Harford County Forensics League. Members can perform anything from Dramatic Readings to interpretations of Children’s Literature, to Team Debating.

  3. “We have a young team, but they seem to be very enthusiastic and initially they seem very talented. Students have to compete in five meets to compete in finals and we are inviting students to join the National League with us. We’re always looking for more challenge,” explains sponsor Mrs. Dallam.

  4. Students are welcome to come to meetings or put a note in Mrs. Dallam’s mailbox.

 

  1. Student Government Association (SGA) (Advisor: Mr. Scarborough)

  2. The SGA gives students a voice in decisions that affect the NHHS community, region and state. Each club day the SGA will hold its general assembly meeting to inform students of events and discuss bills to be presented.

  3. “Every year SGA does two blood drives fall and early spring, the academic awards assembly for people who earned a cumulative 3.5 GPA for the year in october, the homecoming dance, talent show in February, hawks stock in May and all along the way we have in-school general assembly meetings. President Hannah Herron is trying more and more to be involved in the county, state and national level of SGA,” says sponsor Mr. Scarborough.

  4. Students must let their advisory teachers know if they are interested in becoming a homeroom representative or let their club advisor know they wish to represent their club at the meetings.

 

  1. Students Taking a Responsible Stand (STARS) (Sponsor: Mrs. Rake)

  2. S.T.A.R.S. promotes an alcohol and drug-free life and focuses on positive decision making skills.

  3. “We’re going to try and do Ghost day again, have a speaker for Prom and something at homecoming,” says sponsor Mrs. Rake

  4. Register for S.T.A.R.S. in August and September. $5 club dues.

 

  1. Varsity club (Advisor:  Mr. Liebel)

  2. The Varsity Club is responsible for the Homecoming Festival at the football game and for the Sadie Hawkins dance.

  3. “We’re doing all kinds of things. Our biggest is that we’re going to sell the rubber bands bracelets for Hawks Pride and cancer awareness,” explains sponsor Mr. Liebel.
