Attention teachers…

Hey teachers, if you were wondering why students don’t do their homework, here’s the reason.

Some students will tell you that you it’s because they are too busy.  Some will tell you they just don’t care. But really, I think there’s one over- riding reason we don’t do homework.

It’s because the work we get is meaningless.

The busy work that gets tossed at us for homework is unnecessary. If teachers really want us to complete the work they assign, then give us something that will actually help us learn, will make us think.. Drawing? Coloring? Aside from staying in the lines, what is this teaching us? Making book cover collages? Why?   Homework that is assigned and never checked or discussed?  What’s the point?  Essays collected and never returned?  Why bother?

So instead of giving us the 40  page long chapter, and the questions that have four parts each, assign a project or homework that is more hands on, intrigue us. Motivate us.

We like to stand out or put something in our own words, so give us something that makes us put our own spin on it. Let us show you what we know, that we have opinions, and that we want to learn. Give us something like a hands on project where we have to go out and collect outside information and turn it into a powerpoint, or a model, or an essay of some sorts. Give us a choice. Not every student learns the same way so therefore, students should be given options that still stay inside the guide lines but help them learn the best. And wouldn’t it be more fun for you teachers to grade unique projects instead of looking at the same thing for hours?

If teachers challenging but interesting way to learn then that could potentially make us stand out for colleges. When colleges or even jobs look in your background or ask for examples of work then students could display something creative and interesting which could give them the edge they need. In doing this, students wouldn’t be apt to complain about all the work they get, and instead feel of sense of pride in their accomplishments.

Not every teacher has fallen to this criticism, some have taken the challenge and have come up with creative ways to make us learn. These are the classes that students look forward to, and when asked students say that those teachers are their favorites.

Please, please, PLEASE… teachers do not give us the unnecessary busy work. We are already overloaded, and we would rather do something creative or exciting. Get us motivated.
