Without the heart of a soldier, America is nothing

Why does our society believe that $1,900,000 should go to a man who can run up and down a football field catching a ball, yet only $99,000 goes to an active duty soldier who is risking his life to serve and protect our country?

How is it that 10 percent of our nations veterans are unemployed and 12 percent are homeless?

How is it that 700,000 people can show up for the Seahawks Super Bowl parade in Seattle yet no one shows up to welcome a soldier home from battle?

Clearly, the American public has a misguided interpretation of what is important.

I know that football has its place in culture, but what I question whether or not that place should be above that of military veterans. In fact, instead of honoring them we neglect to provide them with what they need.

Recently a soldier severely injured in battle was trying to board a Delta Airlines plane. This man lost both of his legs and although he has prosthetics, it was hard to navigate the narrow aisles of the plane.

As he was making his way to the back of the plane, he was bumping into people and objects obviously humiliated. Tears were streaming down his face, yet he kept trying to get to his seat.

Numerous passengers offered their first class seats to the man but the stewardess would not allow it because the doors were closed for take off.

The stewardess’ behavior and Delta Airlines should be ashamed at their lack of compassion.Their behavior should never, EVER be acceptable. After realizing what this man was a veteran, the airline should have done everything in its power to keep him comfortable. Instead, all these employees did was add to the

humiliation soldiers like this one and others experience regularly.

While this incident is clearly unacceptable, there are other cases in which Delta Airlines has reacted with the decorum due to soldiers. On a Delta Airlines flight, Travel expert Johnny Jet from the Huffington Post was able to witness a fallen soldier being honored home. The passengers of flight 2255 from Atlanta to Los Angeles had no idea they were carrying a fallen soldier home until the captain announced it. They all sat and watched the casket being removed from the plane towards the soldier’s family members, no one moved and no one spoke.

It is time for the flight attendants of the Delta Airlines flight that added humiliation to a veteran to learn a lesson from the flight attendants who knew how to treat a soldier. Without the heart of a soldier, America is nothing.
