Participation causes greatness

At North Harford there are over 30 clubs, around 4-5 sports per season, and various after school activities like the talent show and filly football. Football has around 10 games, half home and half away.

The question is:  how many of these things have YOU participated in? And what’s your excuse for doing nothing if you haven’t?

As each year passes I’ve noticed a trend: people think they’re “too cool” to participate in school events. To a certain extent, I understand;  the fear of judgement from peers is something most high schoolers have. But the only one who cares is you.  No one will think you’re lame for actually wanting to go to homecoming, or that you’re weird if you stay after school for speech and debate.

Being active in school can only benefit you in the end. There’s no excuse for you to sit on the couch doing nothing while there’s a homecoming football game going on.

Participating in clubs or sports teams opens you up to new people or experiences you otherwise wouldn’t have been exposed to.  You can create memories that you will remember for years to come, with people you can stay connected with for life. You can discover new things about yourself such as your hidden talents.

If you’re not scared of your peers then what else is your motive? I understand people have jobs that take up time, but I know of people with jobs who at least make an effort to come to school events. If you say that there’s nothing you like then you’re lying, because there is no way you dont like anything in the wide variety from sports to musicals to arts.

If you aren’t a varsity football player try out for the musical, join chess club or read a book in book club.

Now I may be crazy, but I have a mental list of things I want to do in high school. You get one shot at high school, so get it right.

If you want to develop a better relationship with your phone or tv remote then so be it. But if you want to develop relationships with peers or teachers that can outlast any Grey’s Anatomy marathon, then choose to get involved.

I promise you, it will be worth every second.
