Mix 106.5 ‘Summer Blast’

Fans waited outside of Powerplant Live! Pavilion for more than 10 hours in 90 degree heat on July 1st for Mix 106.5’s ‘Summer Blast’. This concert special features the artists, Margaret Valentine, A Great Big World, and Ed Sheeran.

As fans waited outside of the venue, they had to make several trips to get food and water, or even just to walk into one of the air-conditioned buildings. Although, while in the venue, the heat continued to make conditions worse for the fans.

The heat and humidity had gotten so bad with everyone in the audience cramming together, staff had to pass out water to everyone in the audience out of fear that someone may get hurt due to the extreme heat. However, the heat did not stop the show from going on.

Margaret Valentine was the first to take the stage to warm up the crowd. While the audience got a sample of her debut album, Valentine sang her most popular singles “Change the Story” and “Love and Affection.” Along with engaging the audience with her lyrical riffs, Valentine also gave them relationship advice between her songs.

Once A Great Big World had taken the stage, they engaged the crowd to sing along with their more upbeat songs including “Rockstar” and “Land of Opportunity.” In the midst of trumpet and piano solos, one of the lead singers, Chad Vaccarino, also had gotten a chance to talk about sexuality and their song “Everyone is Gay”.

Vaccarino had said that they were challenged by their friends, who also ran the website EveryoneisGay.com, to write “the gayest song ever.” This song focuses on the act of staying true to yourself and embracing our diversity.

The most talked about star going to be at the event was Ed Sheeran. Sheeran’s latest album ‘X’ had been released just a week before, so Summer Blast was one of the first events where Sheeran performed some of his latest songs like “Don’t” and “Sing.”

Once the concert was over, some fans rushed to the stage in hopes to get a souvenir of what Sheeran had left on stage. While some fans got a leftover water bottle, one girl had gotten very lucky and received Sheeran’s set list of the night.
