Fall Music Preview

According to drama director, North Harford has always produced “broadway style shows” that are spectacular and never cease to amaze the audience. “This play is different from past years, because we are able to categorize groups of students,” said Green, “So we are able to work more individually with different students, because there really are not a lot of full cast scenes. But we have a big, huge cast working on individual scenes.   It’s very beneficial.”

Green also said that “This is a beautiful story, and the reason why it’s so beautiful is because the story is about a real life family.” She continued to say that “There’s even a Lodge in Stowe, Vermont. It’s so cool that you can go meet the real Von Trapps.”

How do you solve a problem like  casting for the memorable role of Maria?  Senior Scarlet Dare has performed in shows at NHHS for nine years. To find out that she got the lead made her jump for joy. “It feels amazing to have gotten the lead! Especially such an iconic character as Maria. This has been my dream since I was a little girl,” said Dare.

Dare also states “The musical represents just how much music can change lives. I think this show has so many powerful themes and messages and has the power to bring both laughter and tears from the audience members.”

Junior  Elizabeth Eakes, who plays the role of Liesl,  said that “It’s a challenge to get her[Liesl] true feelings to shine through sometimes. She’s actually a very complex girl, she is going through a lot at times.” Eakes also mentioned that “16 going on 17” is my favorite song to perform because I get to sing and dance the most. But  she said Edelweiss is “so pretty and The Sound of Music is so classic.”

Sophomore Bethany Birchfield who is in the ensemble says, “As a townsperson, I feel like the ensemble ethic is really strong! We’ve all been together last year and we all have formed bonds that will last a really long time. I haven’t been to many rehearsals yet this year. But I’m really excited to go through this experience again with the people who always make me smile.”

The show also features a bit of history, including Nazis.“We control the plot a little, because without us[The Nazis] the musical wouldn’t have a conflict,” said senior Olivia Brown.

Senior Abby Ulmer is one of the nearly 30 nuns in the play and says  the great part about the play is “Getting to hang out with all of my friends. Meeting new people is also great!”

Senior Ary Colon-Papaterra will perform as the role of the baroness. “ I thoroughly enjoy my role as the baroness! She is wealthy, classy, elegant, and sophisticated. I think what is special about her is that she can put other  people’s happiness before her own. once she realizes that the Captain belongs with Maria, she leaves to allow them to be happy together.”

Green is confident the show will be remarkable.  “Considering that there are so many new actors who haven’t been in a musical before the show is doing really well and they are progressing nicely.” Dare said that “The show will most certainly come together and be something amazing.”

The play will take place both on November 20 at 7:00 and November 21 at 2:00 (The matinee) and 7:00.
