Goodbye snow, hello spring sports

The snow has melted, the fields are lined and the track is clear, the time has come for spring sports. As the quack pack attends the upcoming sporting events it should be expected to see news faces on the coaching staffs. This year there are five new coaches, including Jennifer Bice and Julio Fernandez for varsity softball and Josh Korbec,  Miak Fronte, Laura and Ryan Bayne for track and field.

  Jennifer Bice: Varsity softball

From math teacher to volleyball coach, Bice has decided to add one more title to her list as varsity softball coach this spring season. After four days of tryouts and a few practices under way, Bice described them as “really good” and all the girls that came out as “impressive.”

As far as the this season goes, Bice is expecting a strong team and a very competitive group of girls. She is hoping that the team will have a season filled with no regrets and a lot of fun. Additionally, Bice is hopeful her positive attitude and her willingness to always support her athletes will lead the varsity softball team to a successful season.

Julio Fernandez: Varsity softball

Originally a sprinting coach for the track and field team, Fernandez has decided to make a switch and is now a varsity softball coach for this spring season. Although snow disrupted the usual process of tryouts, Fernandez is pleased with the way they turned out.

“It’s always tough with indoor tryouts for a typically outdoor sport, but the girls really brought it; we have some quality athletes,” Fernandez stated.

Fernandez’s short term goal is to gel as a team, but he’s also hoping the entire season is filled with fun and the team “goes after it.”

Fernandez is a father of two daughters and believes this helps him better relate to all his players. He wants all his athletes to know he cares about each of them and he wants them to come to each game and challenge every team they play.

Josh Korbec: Track and field

FOT teacher Josh Korbec is hoping to win conference meets and score well in the UCBAC championship as he coaches the track and field team this spring season. After a few practices under way, Korbec describes the team has “having potential” and filled with “great athletes.”

After the loss of the head coach from the 2014 team, Korbec stated this year is a rebuilding year as a team but is still setting the standards high for each athlete and is expecting each individual to improve throughout the season.

Korbec is hoping his experience, dedication and knowledge of track will lead the track and field team is a victorious season.

Ryan and Laura Bayne

After a successful cross country season, Mr. Bayne has decided to enlist the help of his wife to coach the track and field team. According to Mr. Bayne, the boy’s track team has small numbers but both the girls and boys teams will be balance.

“I have many years of experience, I have coached middle, and high school and college running. I also received my national coaching certificate years ago,” Mr. Bayne stated.  Bayne is hoping his years of experience will help lead his team to season.

Mrs. Bayne has great faith in the girls team this season.

“I’m excited for this season and am looking forward to developing strength, growing and creating depth within our team, Mrs. Bayne stated. “I believe our girls team will be extremely strong this year since there are so many,” Bayne continued.
