Find the right fit as freshmen

Varsity sports at the high school level usually attract the skill set of upperclassmen.  While this is typically true, there are sometimes freshmen who have the skill set necessary to compete at that level.

Freshmen Allie Bufano, who is on the varsity basketball team, says that varsity is “more exciting because you are hanging out with older kids and not just the people that you knew before and you get to learn from them.” She also talks about how playing on a varsity team makes her want to keep her grades up so that she can stay in the game.

Another freshmen that is on a varsity team is Nick Danielczyk. He is on the swim team and he says that he will be doing this sport next year. “I don’t know if it will be helping me with my school work because it does take up a lot of time with the practice and the meets, but that just means I need to work harder,” said Danielczyk. “I will definitely be doing it for the next three years.”

He also recommends students that who are coming in next year to participate in sports because “you are part of a team and everyone treats you equally, like you’re not just going to get cast aside because you’re a freshmen…like on the swim team especially, you’re all one big happy family.”

Finally Twins Emily and Lizzie Catrambone, who are also part of the swim team talk about what it’s like to be on the team. Emily talks about how she likes being in a varsity sport and would definitely recommend it to other people.  “It’s fun, you get to meet new people and it’s new experiences.” Lizzy says that “I really enjoy swimming for the high school because it’s a lot less stressful than having to do a club sport and it’s a lot of fun meeting new people from different grade levels. It’s just fun.” She also thinks that it is helping her with her academics because “ It keeps you on a schedule so you always have like a time to be somewhere and it keeps you organized and it helps you get ahead on your schoolwork.”
