Lacrosse players staying active over summer; Athletes preparing for next season

School sports have ended for the year, but that does not stop athletes from participating in their sports over the summer. Many student athletes play for a club lacrosse team over the summer and into the fall.

Most club teams start practicing a few weeks after high school sports end to prepare for the upcoming tournaments at the start of summer.

Junior Reilly Holmstrom plays for Skywalkers, she currently has played a total of four years on a club team. The first two years she played for TLC [Towson Lacrosse Club] and now Skywalkers.

Junior Piper Wright plays for NEMS [North East Maryland Select], she has played club lacrosse for four years, when she started she played for True MD lax but the program folded so she moved to NEMS for her last year of club.

Holmstrom said, “I chose to play for Skywalkers because I get to work with my amazing goalie coach, as well as being coached by amazing current college players. Skywalkers also has a high commitment reputation which was something that I was looking for going into recruiting.”

Junior Kendall Fortune plays on the same team as Holmstrom. Fortune said, “my favorite part of playing a club sport is being on a team with girls from different areas and playing at a more competitive level.”

Junior Wyatt Ralph plays for Strippers, he started playing his freshman year when his coach asked him to play. Ralph said, “playing over the summer is fun and keeps me doing something and I love being with a different group of guys.”

Both Ralph and Holmstrom said they think that playing club is important if you are planning to continue your career into college. “I think playing club is important for learning how to promote yourself. Without club lacrosse I don’t think I would know how to effectively communicate to people in a business-like manner,” said Holmstrom.
Fortune said, “I do not think playing on a club team is necessary but I do think the benefits are more notable in a player that plays club compared to one that does not.”

Wright said, “My favorite part about playing club lacrosse is being able to make new friendships with so many people, and just being able to have fun with friends over the fall/ summer.” She added, “The relationships I have made not only with the players but coaches are unforgettable and there are always amazing memories being made.”
