New show moving in on ABC Family
The Fosters premiered on ABC Family on June 3. This one hour, weekly TV drama is right from the 21st century.
Revolving around a foster family of five children and two parents, this show is proving to be more controversial than anyone thought, starting with the fact that the parents are homosexual mothers, Stef and Lena.
“It really pushes social barriers,” said Katie Grafton, a sophomore at North Harford High School.
Stef Foster (Teri Polo) is a devoted police officer, mother, and partner. Lena Adams (Sherri Saum) is a vice principal at Anchor Beach Community Charter School, where all the children attend.
Brandon (David Lambert), Stef’s biological son from her previous marriage, welcomed the twins, Marianna (Cierra Ramirez) and Jesus (Jake T. Austin), with open arms years ago when they were officially adopted by his moms. However, he and everyone else are cautious when a new foster child is put in their home.
Maia Mitchell plays Callie, a girl who has been in foster care, with her brother, practically her whole life and was just released from juvenile detention. Walking into yet another house, Callie is shocked at what kind of family lives there. Her frank comments only add to the wariness that follows her.
“It’s really amazing because its [The Fosters] interesting to see how all these children, who are foster siblings, fit together so perfectly, but are unique in their own ways,” said Emily Slaby, a senior at North Harford High School.
Like any foster children, the twins have questions about their past and their biological family. Marianna goes behind her moms’ backs and even her twin brother’s to contact her biological mother, who then asks her to do something catastrophic. But does her mother see Marianna as her daughter or just someone to take advantage of?
Within a few days Brandon realizes Callie is hiding something from the family, but he is there to help anyway and as more than a brotherly figure.
In the end, Lena and Stef question if Callie can have a more permanent home in the Foster family, but can they look past her life threatening past?
“They [the foster children] face the same struggles as we do as teens today, but are proud of their family and won’t let anyone tear them apart,” said Slaby.
