Artist Feature: Kelly Roman

1. What is your aspiration?

I hope to become either an illustrator, a graphic designer, or an animator or designer for Disney Pixar. I’m pretty open to many different art opportunities though! It would also be neat to have my own etsy shop eventually.

2. Who are your inspirations?

My favorite artists are Albrecht Dürer, Vincent Van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, Yaroslav Gerzhedovich, and August Malmström to name a few!

3. What led you to art?

When I was about three or four, my grandmother (who is a retired art teacher) came to my house and brought over some watercolor paints, paint brushes, and paper. She showed me a whole bunch of different techniques of how to use the brush and paints. I remember after she brought over those supplies, I would spend so much of my play time painting.

4. How would you categorize your style?

I love drawing people with dramatic expressions. I like to also include some natural or whimsical elements to my pieces. I guess my style is some sort of whimsical expressionism- however I am sure my style will evolve!

5. What have you been doing to get your name and artwork known to the public?

I’ve been putting my artwork on social media sites (like Facebook, Tumblr, Flickr, and Instagram). Art shows also help spread the word! Once I am finished my portfolio for my AP Studio class, I hope to sell prints of my art.

6. What makes art so special to you?

Art is something that I just get. When I first was taught different ways of how to draw or paint, something in my brain clicked and I understood how to do it. I tend to get fairly absorbed into my art whenever I’m working. I get so focused and the whole world is shut out from around me… art is sort of like meditation to me. Art is soulful.

7. What are your plans for the next few years?

I plan on going to HCC for one or two years to get my basic studies done and to get my associates. I then plan on going to MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) to get my bachelors in visual arts or animation. That’s my plan right now but who knows what the future has planned for me!

8. What forms of art do you enjoy besides drawing and painting?
I work with glass in Advanced Crafts class, I make terrariums, I occasionally sculpt pieces with clay, and I do pyrography (which is burning designs into wood, leather, etc.). In the future, I hope to work more with metal and crystal resin. I’m basically into anything and everything when it comes to arts and crafts!
