Music and sports have been colliding recently since Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce started dating. “I think the NFL is getting way more money because of Taylor Swift. People who don’t watch football will watch because they know she will be there, or they want to be like her, so they follow what she is doing,” said sophomore Payten Ivy.
“Fans get a lot more angry about her being there,” sophomore Lila Deckman says. “I’m impartial. She’s a celebrity; it’s bound to happen, [and it’s] no different than celebs getting camera time at any other game.”
“I think it shouldn’t really matter as much as it does, because Taylor Swift is allowed to have a personal life and she just so happened to choose a football player to date. She doesn’t deserve all the hate she is getting for just being at the game and ‘hogging the jumbotron,’” adds sophomore Faith Perrone.
Many people think that she’s having negative and positive effects on the games. “I think she is having both a positive and negative effect on the NFL; she is bringing more money in, but she is enraging the die-hard fans who think she is stealing the attention away,” Perrone states.
A positive thing that does come from Swift’s appearances is “more money for NFL, because Swifties want a chance to see her,” said Deckman. There are “probably a lot” of people that attend NFL games just for a chance to see Swift, she adds.
“I think she is having a negative influence by getting the NFL more money,” says Ivy, “They had enough money as it is, but now that there’s more coming in, they want it to stay that way.”
Some people also believe that Swift has led to the games being rigged. “Personally, I think the NFL is rigging the playoff games and Super Bowl to make the Chiefs win, just so more money is spent because of [Swift],” Ivy claims. “If [Swift’s] team doesn’t make the Super Bowl, there would be no reason for all of the other fans following her to be spending their money on tickets.”
