On September 6, the Beetlejuice sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, hit the big screen. This long-awaited sequel came 36 years after the original movie, Beetlejuice, was released. People who watched the original movie can now take their kids to see the sequel. “My mom grew up with the first movie, so she wanted me and my sister to go see it with her,” says junior Mikayla Dawson.
One of the draws to the movie was that, “It had the original characters,” said junior Lexi Bostic. Returning cast members for the sequel included Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara. While many cast members returned for the sequel, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, and Jeffrey Jones did not. This film also introduces new faces with Monica Bellucci, Justin Theroux, and Jenna Ortega.
“I thought the casting was really good and they did a great job giving it a trippy effect,” said Dawson. This movie is good for anyone looking for “plot twists,” continues the junior, “and want to watch a good Halloween movie,” to get into the spooky spirit of the season.
“In its opening weekend, the sequel grossed a whopping $145.4 million worldwide, consisting of $110 million at the domestic box office and $35.4 million from international markets,” Screenrant.com says, “This means that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has nearly doubled the entire lifetime gross of the original movie in just three days.”
This immediate popularity has shown that it has the “same vibe as the original,” Bostic says. Fans can expect the movie to be “funny and [have] a great plot,” Bostic adds, with “Jokes throughout the movie.”
While the sequel has made more money than the original, “I feel that they both were good in their own way.” says Bostic. This movie was a “good family movie night movie because it had a lot of emotion,” according to Dawson.
The rating for the original Beetlejuice movie is PG, meanwhile the sequel has a higher rating of PG-13. This rating is, “due to violence, themes, scary scenes, and language,” says childrenandmedia.org.
