Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that has recently reached a significant outbreak. This virus causes respiratory infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. It was first identified in 2001, according to the CDC.
HMPV outbreaks tend to occur in the winter, as with other viruses like COVID, RSV, and the flu. All of these viruses have similar symptoms such as fevers, coughs, sore throats, wheezing, and fatigue.
HMPV is primarily spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. School nurse Mrs. Melissa Wilson says, “it’s difficult for schools to stop the spread of viruses” because it could also be transmitted by touching contaminated surfaces and touching the face. Even though this virus is spread easily, Wilson mentioned, “It’s best to wash your hands after touching surfaces in public spaces, before eating, and frequent handwashing.”
In the United States, 1.94% of weekly tests are positive for HMPV during the winter months, according to Cleveland Clinic. If infected and bad enough, hospitalization may occur for some individuals that are more at risk with respiratory illnesses. More ways to prevent this sickness and many others include using hand sanitizer and washing your hands, avoiding infected individuals until they are no longer contagious, and, lastly, disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.
For HMPV, there is currently no treatment or vaccine to help fight or get rid of – the cure is the body fighting the infection, and that’s it. Due to there being no treatment or vaccine, it could take around seven to ten days for mild cases and one to two weeks for more moderate to severe cases, according to the CDC. All an individual could do that has this virus is take the time to rest and hydrate. Some medications, like Advil or Tylenol, can help alleviate some of the symptoms.
Winter is one of the harshest seasons because of all the sickness that goes around, especially HMPV. It is a significant cause of respiratory illness and could be a huge problem for some individuals with asthma, especially during outbreaks like this. Public awareness and adherence to preventive measures are crucial in controlling the spread of this virus.
