2014 Winter Dance went off without a hitch;
Miller, Zdon crowned king, queen
Music, dancing, and friends; three words that mean a good time for high school students. Students enjoyed themselves at this year’s Winter Dance (formerly known as the Snowflake Dance) on Saturday, February 1.
With approximately 250 students in attendance, the dance was small, but it certainly was not lacking in fun.
PTSA members began setting up for the dance just after school let out on Friday, January 31 and finished a few hours before the doors opened at 7pm on Saturday.
“We had almost 100 snowflakes hanging in the hall where kids entered the school, a backdrop for the court, decorative tree limbs, and wintery posters around the cafeteria and hallway,” said Mrs. Maureen Jennings.
Jennings was in charge of planning, setting and cleaning up, and everything else that had to be done for the dance. Many parents had a hand in helping with the various stages of the dance, including setting up, refilling snacks, and cleaning up after the dance was complete.
“This dance brings the income needed to financially support the After Prom Party. I think if more students knew, more would attend,” said Jennings.
Many don’t know the Winter Dance raises money for the PTSA After Prom Party, which is why many PTSA members are surprised at the low number of attendance. Basically, without this dance there would not be an after prom party.
“I had no clue the Winter Dance raised money for the After Prom Party. I don’t think anybody knows that,” said senior Katherine Wood.
Wood attended the dance with a couple of her friends, but said she would have brought more if she knew this was what paid for the After Prom Party.
The court for the Winter Dance were nominated by the teachers who head the clubs that the students are involved in. Seniors represented the Winter Court. The gentlemen on court were Ben Boegner, Jimmy Foster, Joey Miller, and Garrett Sadtler. The ladies on court included Becky Burgess, Paige Rickey, Taylor Stower, Haley Sturgi, and Kristen Zdon.
Zdon and Miller were crowned king and queen followed by a roar of cheers.
“It was exciting to hear my name called because I am proud to represent North Harford. I hope that people look up to me as a role model in and out of school through my extracurriculars. Also, for people to notice the dedication I put into this school as a leader; it’s a great feeling,” said Zdon.
Miller was nominated through Future Educators of America and Zdon as a representative of the National Honor Society, in which she is president.
“I was so surprised about winning. I honestly thought Garrett was going to win,” said Miller.
The 2013 Winter Dance king and queen, Alex Posko and Shiloh McCurry, were there to pass the crowns onto the new royalty.
“They are a well deserving king and queen,” said Wood.
