Social distancing affects high schoolers

According to social scientists, there are three different types of people, introverts, outgoing extroverts, and the peoples in the middle of it all. With the coronavirus pandemic, all kinds of people are having to adjust to being stuck at home after Governor Larry Hogan placed a lockdown on all of Maryland and made social distancing mandatory.

Sophomore, Annie Elliott and introvert says she “always preferred to stay at home even before quarantine regulations.”  Elliott adds her introverted lifestyle has helped her get through social distancing. “Life felt the same even if social distancing was in the picture or not.” Elliott also adds that she doesn’t “care whether [she] socializes or not,” and though she is a very introverted person the idea of “not knowing when social distancing itself will end” is a negative for her.

Junior Emily Johnson is frustrated with having to “sit at home [and do] nothing” and deal with being “constantly aware of who you’re around.”   Though keeping up the same social life is difficult without being able to see friends in person, Johnson still keeps in touch with friends through social media, FaceTime calls and texting. Though she misses her friends, Johnson says she enjoys spending this time with her family.

Freshman and extrovert Sierra McManus describes herself as having a “really big personality,” which she says can become difficult to maintain when having to always stay home. Mcmanus also says these highschool years are supposed to be “the best years of our lives” and we are “trapped in our houses for months missing out on so much.” Extroverts like McManus say they are stressed about not having sports and friends to help them being “unaware of what will happen next.”

On the brighter side Mcmanus said she “has learned so much about her family over these past weeks” the she would have never learned. Mcmanus also says that this is a psychological lesson for her and she is “really glad [she] has learned some of these things.”
