North Harford High school has gotten a four star rating out of five stars. The school placed in the 82nd percentile and the final grade on the Maryland report card is 67.6%.
All schools in Maryland received a report card based on how well the school performs in four different areas. The schools received points based on how they performed and got a certain number of stars.
There are four areas that the school is being judged in. These areas include academic achievement, graduation rate, readiness for post-secondary success, and school quality and student success. The amount of stars given to each school is based on how high the percentage is that the school got.
NHHS Principal, Mr. Bryan Pawlicki says he is happy with how the school did on the report card. “I was pleased because it was better than the prior year,” said Pawlicki. The formula was slightly changed so the grade was a bit of a surprise because the school made more points but got less credit.
The area that students struggle with the most is academic preformance. This area is based on how students perform on standardized tests. The total possible points earned for this area was 30 points. The Hawks instead got 15.7 points.
Pawlicki feels that students need to improve English and math standardized test scores. “If students take the test more seriously that might help,” explained Pawlicki. Students used to just have to sit in on the tests and the scores didn’t matter, so nobody would care much about the scores. Now the scores are affecting a lot of what students can do senior year.
The area that the school scored the highest in is graduation rate. This area is based on if students are graduating on time. Out of a total of 15 points the school earned 14.5 points.
“Our graduation rate is really good, our programs, our safe environment, and the way students feel about the school,” said Pawlicki when asked what we did best on. There are many ways North Harford students can help to maintain good scores in these sections. “Kids doing their best and maintaining a positive attitude about school,” stated the Principal when asked how we can maintain this good score.
North Harford got 9.5 points out of 10 points in the postsecondary success category. These points are earned by the percent of ninth grade students earning four credits and the percent of students completing high school meeting standards beyond their coursework.
In the school quality and student success category Hawks earned 21.1 points out of 35 possible points. This grade shows how well the school quality is and how the environment is. Doing well in this category shows that North Harford is a quality school and students are successful in many areas.
