Get on board: Sack goes out on water

Get on board, junior Jacob Sack has been in deep water for years. He has been sailing since about the age of 12. Sack says he loves the water and wants others to enjoy it too.

Sack explains the reason he first went out on the water was, “just because he found it interesting.” He says growing up he read books about sailing and grew an interest in it. “Reading so much about sailing always made me want to try it and one day I decided to because what did I have to lose,” Sack says.

Sack started sailing at Baltimore County Sailing Center where he got to go out on the water with a partner every time he sailed. This sailing center is located outside Rocky Point Park. There are summer camps you can sign up to sail. He was accompanied by the same partner every trip so after a while, they became good friends which made sailing even more enjoyable than it already was.

Sack says windy days were the best days for sailing and he prefers cloudy days over sunny days because it gets, “way too hot when sunny.” Sack likes it when the boat moves faster because the wind against him makes it less hot and more fun.

“I like choppy days a lot, which is when the waves are bigger, so the boat moves faster,” Sack says. He says along with reading books he knows a captain on a large sailboat which made him get into sailing. Seeing the captain on such a big sailboat made him want to follow his dreams and put himself out there on the sea.

“Sadly, my sailing career ended when Covid hit,” Sack says. He explains when Covid started, and things started shutting down the program he was a part of which left him with nowhere to sail. Sack misses being on the waters but understands why it had to be shut down.

Sack encourages anyone who would want to try sailing to do it. He thinks it is a clever way to connect with other people who also sail. He says it is something new to learn and is a relaxing way to clear your mind out on the water.
