‘Drop your drama at the door’

CHEER1    Though often overlooked, the North Harford cheerleading squad plays an important role in every season. With some pep in their step, this team, comprised of all females and one male, is visible at every home football game.

Senior Gabbi Bunnell, a returning cheerleader, claims the team has high expectations for the season, including placing top five at counties and earning a chance at the regional title. Standing in their way, according to Bunnell, could be the team’s inability to work together.

“Drop your drama at the door,” said Bunnell as advice to her teammates.

Last year, the team placed seventh at counties, but with the new skills of two freshmen there is a chance the team could go to the regional tournament and place in the top five at counties. Megan Calhoun and Kayla Dellone bring higher points to the routines through their exceptional abilities as flyers, through their flexibility, and tumbling.

Conditioning has also played a significant role in the success of this team.

“I ran the Ma and Pa trail every Friday during the summer,” said Bunnell.

Bunnell is ready to place higher than seventh at the county tournament at Harford Technical High School. The team also has two other tournaments in which they will compete and which will be hosted by Kenwood High School and North Harford respectively.

With no captains this season, the team is looking to the guidance of their returning members and their coach, Emily Hilberg.
