Golf season in full swing, Team members have high hopes for season

Junior captain Luke Johnson practices his putting at Geneva Farms. Practicing technique allowed the team to start the season undefeated.

With the onset of the fall sport season, the golf team is excited about the possibilities of the 2013 season. The season has already been a big success as the team has started out undefeated.

To prepare for the season, the golfers prepared by playing at local golf courses.  Most would go to driving ranges at Greystone and Blackhorse golf courses to practice their swing.

“I played a lot of golf in the offseason to prepare,” said junior Josh Nagangest.

Many of the golfers have high hopes for the rest of the season.  Even with their loss at the UCBAC tournament to Bel Air by three strokes, the golf team has big expectation for themselves.

“My goal is to go to states along with the rest of my team,” said junior captain, Luke Johnson.

Johnson and senior Morgan Wirtz were voted by their fellow teammates to be the captains of the team.  Each has the duty of leading their team throughout the rest of the season.

“I really want to help the younger members of the team with technique, like how they swing, said Johnson.

Along with competition with other teams, some golfers have a friendly competition amongst themselves.  Some of the newer golfers have made it a goal to try and beat more experienced team members.

“I want to beat Luke Johnson,” said first year senior golfer Richie VonNordeck.

The newer golfers also want to gain  more experience in order to better themselves.  Most have high hopes for themselves

“I’m doing pretty well for my first year,” said senior Brett McGeehan.

Since the golf team is sometimes is not as recognized as other sports, it is harder to get people to join.  Students are encouraged to join, though.

“I encourage everyone to join. It is a lot of fun,” said McGeehan.

The  team is led by Mr. Nick Panos. Panos gives his time in order to help the golfers improve technique individually and wants the team to increase its skill as a whole.

“Bel Air is the reigning District Champion, so we believe they will be the team to beat at the regional tournament,” said Panos.
