Girls take over football field;

Seniors come out on top

The junior girls versus senior girls; it was a matchup for the ages. The annual Filly Football game took place on November 12 at the North Harford stadium.

This year was the first Filly Football game in two years. The past couple of years the game has been cancelled.

“I was disappointed it didn’t happen last year,” said senior Gabi Bunnell.

Though this seems like a unique North Harford tradition, Bel Air High School as well as other Harford County schools have a similar event called the “Powder Puff Game”.

The junior girls were coached by Jessica Siegel. This was her first year coaching a Filly football team.

“I like football and decided why not when I was asked,” said Siegel.

The senior girls team was coached by Scott Larbalestrier. He has coached teams in the past. Both coaches want the girls to have fun and interact with different people.

“I want it to be a fun noncompetitive activity,” said Siegel.

The trash talking was heavy between the two teams before the game. From twitter to text messages, both classes were involved in friendly competition that even continued onto the field.

“The juniors are going down,” said Bunnell prior to the game.

Robin McConnell, a junior, is playing for the experience and to do something she loves. McConnell is looking to make another high school memory.

“I want to have fun with it and take the seniors down,” said McConnell.

Bunnell, like many of the girls, wanted to use this opportunity to prove that girls can play football and make new friends with girls she normally wouldn’t socialize with.

It was a cold night; real football weather some had said, but the girls played hard. The cold didn’t affect the seniors from the start. Seniors took control of the scoreboard in a 22- 0 victory.

Unlike traditional football, the girls played flag football where touchdowns were a standard six points, but there was no extra point kick. Instead a run or pass was needed to be made from the two yard line. The teams were given four downs to get 25 yards. It was a 48 minute game split into two halves.

The seniors had two interceptions that resulted in touchdowns and made all two point conversions except one. The juniors didn’t get a first down until well into the game, however, they did keep the seniors from scoring in the second half of the game.

“So happy I did filly football cause it was so much fun,” senior Juliet Dolinar tweeted after the game.

The seniors were quick to celebrate the win, but did so in a sportsmanlike fashion. The Class of 2014 ran to their opponents and hugged them rather than standing in a line and shaking hands.

The senior team wins the Juniors vs Seniors Filly Football game held on November 12. It was a shutout game, with the seniors scoring 22 points.
