Girls JV volleyball “grows together”, Team stands undefeated with 7 – 0 record
October 22, 2021
“We make sure to have a good time every game and every practice,” sophomore Katrina Winkler states. As a relatively new team, the girls are pushing to make a name for themselves.
The team “has been on a winning streak since the season started,” according to the tenth grader. With home games every Tuesday and away games every Thursday, they “are only in class for about 15 minutes” when they have to travel.
As a result, Winkler says everyone is tired by the time they return home. She adds, it takes “motivation doing it [homework]that late at night.” On the other hand, Team Captain Kailyn McCoy doesn’t think it is a major struggle due to the fact that she is “a student before an athlete.” But for some, this is still a problem.
If students are enrolled in Honors and Advanced Placement classes, it’s hard “to keep from falling behind,” Winkler explains.
However, students say they are enjoying being on the team very much! Most players on the team are freshmen and sophomores, but they don’t let the odds stop them. Winkler includes. “This is my first year ever playing volleyball, and I absolutely love it.”
Emma Cornman says, “My team members and I all became friends relatively quickly.” She says the team makes bonding a priority through “working together, encouragement, smiles, and having fun.”
Team captain Kailyn McCoy explains that it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows but “the only thing we can do is work with one another!”
The role of the team captain is “a privilege that one must not take for granted” according to GameTime Sports (GMTM). McCoy understands this as she feels, “some struggles are making sure that [she] has everything coach needs.”
Some tasks that a team captain might complete include standing with the referees and other teams before the match and doing the coin toss to see which team serves and which team chooses the side of the court they want to start on. Another type is floor captains and they are players who are deeply invested in the sport and the rules of the game.
They report any questionable calls or plays and relay the decision back to the coach and teammates, So, they “help lead the team” GMTM reports.
Another struggle the team captain faces is “trying to please everyone.”
Still, Cornman reassures her when she says the “team is pretty strong and we are all good at working together.” They have games “every Tuesday and Thursday, so if you can, come to watch us play!” Cornman exclaims.
