The Standout Student Award was recently presented to two North Harford Hawks: senior Lilly Heath and junior Morgan Shantz.
The Harford County Public Schools (HCPS) superintendent, Dr. Sean Bulson, along with district principals, has committed to recognizing outstanding students at each school. This award, initiated in October 2022, aims to honor students who demonstrate “positive character traits, acts of kindness, service to others, or other reasons that make them stand out as role models.”
Each month, principals nominate one student and describe why that student deserves recognition. Honorees receive a certificate from Superintendent Bulson to celebrate their achievements. NH principal Mr. Brian Pawlicki explains, “I send out a Forms document to teachers for nominations,” adding, “Then, I read through them and look for a student that fits what the Superintendent is looking for. We search for unique contributions.”
He emphasizes the importance of highlighting students who are making a difference in their community and school. These students “stand out for a reason,” and their impact can be seen in various ways, whether in class, as leaders, or through participation in activities like sports or clubs.
Shantz, who was nominated by math teacher Mr. Bill Wardle, expressed her surprise upon receiving the award: “I was very surprised when I found out I won the award. I didn’t even know it existed!”
Heath also shared her feelings of surprise and gratitude. “I was in statistics class when the superintendent and Mr. Pawlicki walked in to give me the award. It was a very surprising moment,” Heath recalled.
For Heath, the award symbolizes recognition for her hard work, especially her contributions to the Student Government Association (SGA). “The SGA team and I worked hard all summer to organize a great dance for the students at North Harford,” Heath explained. “It’s an accomplishment to be proud of, and it feels wonderful to be recognized for our hard work.”
The Standout Student Award highlights the dedication, character, and contributions of students at the school. Both students have provided valuable insight into what it means to be unique and serve as role models for their peers.
