Tyler, the Creator tours again; Students explore world of rap

From a seven year old writer, to a worldwide performer, Tyler, the Creator is public again on a live tour with his new album, Call Me If You Get Lost.

The Rapper’s biggest hit on his new album is See you Again, with over 61,000 listeners. He had his first concert in 2011. Since then, his concerts have gotten bigger and more populated.

Freshman Meera Patel, has been listening to Tyler for a couple years now. She says she listens to him because “his music is relatable, but at the same time calming in a way with some upbeat songs. It just has a nice vibe.”

Patel mentioned if he has a concert she would “probably attend because it seems like a fun atmosphere.” The freshman found out from friends who the rapper is. Since then she “loves to listen to his fun music.”

Along with Patel, sophomore Ryleigh Kuciara also listens to Tyler, the Creator. Her favorite song by him is New Magic Wand, because of its “good beat and lyrics.” Kuciara started listening to him because of her sister who introduced him to her.

Another sophomore, Cole Hellwig, also listens to the music creator. He mentions Tyler’s songs are appealing to him because he “likes rap, but his is different. When you think of normal rap it’s not the same as his music, it’s not as commercialized.”

Although his music intrigues Hellwig, he wouldn’t go to a concert if he had one because he “doesn’t like concerts and the last concert [he] heard of that was rap, a lot of people died.”

Unlike the other students, seniors Mady Rhoades and Luke Phillips have different opinions. Rhoades said she “doesn’t listen to any of his music because it’s not [her] style.” She also admitted, “if i’m being honest, I haven’t heard of him before.”

Phillips has heard of him before, but only negative things. He shares, “the beats he uses are poor, production is bad, there’s no lyricalness to him, and when he raps he sounds like an idiot.”

There were some students who went to the concerts this past month. Freshman Mollie Fialcowitz attended the concert in Washington D.C. on March 7, 2022. She shares, “it was a really cool experience, and it felt like everyone had the same feeling and excitement for it.”

Fialcowitz has been listening to Tyler for over three years, so this concert was something she’s been wanting to go to for a while. She enjoyed “being able to see him with one of [her] really good friends, it was an amazing experience.”

Along with Fialcowitz, sophomore Elizabeth Herron also attended the concert in Philadelphia on March 6, 2022. She says, “the atmosphere was really cool, everyone had their own style with good moods and positive energy.”

Herron shares, “my sister surprised me with tickets for my birthday, and I’m glad I got to go with her.” She enjoyed how he had three opening acts before he performed, because it “got the excitement up.”

Overall, “everything went really well, it was clean, the dancing and singing was good, and the props were very cool.” He had multiple stages with different settings on it like grass, tile, and a boat in the middle. Herron says, “there was nothing [she] didn’t like about it.”
