Sports for life is a Harford County inclusivity based program for students with disabilities, the main purpose of the program being pairing students with disabilities with peer helpers to compete in various sports. This program is a County-wide program involving all high schools, culminating in tournaments in different skill levels.
The first Harford County Sports for Life program originated in 1999 as a basketball program under the direction of Ginny Popiolek and Bonnie Fry of C.Milton Wright High School. The program expanded and grew to include every high school and evolved into three seasons of sport. These include basketball, bocce, and bowling. At the end of each season, high school teams compete in a countywide tournament against teams of similar skill level.
Several students at NHHS participate in several of the tournaments, Senior Lila Parry states “Having been involved in sports for life for two years I’ve seen how it has truly impacted the people that are a part of it. Sports for life has given me the opportunity to build friendships with people I wouldn’t typically get to interact with. It means so much to me to be a part of a community that is very welcoming and gets to just have fun and enjoy playing sports together.” Demonstrating how impactful and beneficial Sports for Life has been to the several students who participate in it.
