Let’s be straightforward here. Olivia Rodrigo is not that good with her music or her career. Yes, she’s a good actor but music wise it’s not there.
I’ll give it to her, she has some hits that are decent to listen to but I feel like as an artist, there’s a level of commitment you need to have and she doesn’t have it — not saying she’s the only artist with this problem, no, but she just doesn’t have it. With her music seems like her backup in life if something goes wrong.
She first released her album “SOUR” in 2021, during that time it’s a hit — of course it is, still covid that album probably resonates with a lot of people and/ or her fans who have been studying her past relationship with Joshua Bassett and could understand her feelings.
Then there was “GUTS” in 2023, then the deluxe (spilled) version in 2024, which is an album about all her past relationships and experiences with guys. I get it, this can also resonate with other people — I mean it’s life and everyone’s relationship experiences are different yet the same in some aspects.
But now she’s planning on releasing her fourth album “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love” in June but guess what also happened perfectly around this time — she breaks up with her boyfriend of two years Louis Partridge. I think we can all see where this going and it’s kind of annoying.
As an artist, growth and experimentation matter. Exploring new sounds, new genres, new perspectives — that’s what keeps music exciting. When most of the catalog revolves around the same emotional storyline, the songs can start blending together. Also if she really liked being an artist or making music, she’d release music more often, not just when someone breaks her heart or when she gets out of a relationship because it gets a little boring after a while. You know it’s bad when her own fans make serious comments or as a joke like, “Someone needs to break Olivia’s heart again if that means we get more music.” When that becomes the narrative around your artistry, it’s worth questioning.
I’m not a fan of Olivia Rodrigo and I know people will think: Why even write this if you don’t like her music? Because I just think the hype is overly exaggerated. Yes she hasn’t released music in two years so the news can be exciting but hyping it up saying it will be the best album of 2026 when you haven’t even heard a single song or teaser and that the album cover is quantum quote “So breathtaking.” (Mind you it’s just her on a swing..), it’s annoying and makes me personally resent the upcoming album more.
The pattern of how she makes music is just very old and as an artist she should either be an actual artist and experiment and release different styles and sounds of music or just not do music at all and stick to acting or neither — that would just be better than releasing music the second a relationship doesn’t work out.
