Approximately every 4 minutes one person in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and every 10 minutes someone dies from blood cancer, according to lls.org.

The D.U.C.K.S. club, with help from the National Honors Society, is in the process of raising money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. The club’s goal is to raise 1,500 dollars between March 10 and March 28. If they reach their goal Mr. Ed Herbold and Mr. Mark Truszkowski have agreed to sing a song together at the next pep rally.

“It’s really great, and all of the money is going to go to a really good cause,” said senior Nicole Sexton.

The club members began the climb to their goal at the Talent Show on March 6, providing free concessions with the hope that students would donate any spare pocket change or a few dollars to their cause.

“It [the charity] made me realize that we need to live life to the fullest and to cherish the people around me,” said senior Ellie Berrel.

D.U.C.K.S. set up to collect donations during the lunch, but after receiving little donations club president Kristen Zdon decided to change their strategy by getting help from the National Honors Society, and setting up donations boxes at local businesses, such as the Christian Childcare Center of Whiteford.

The club also put up posters around the school to promote their cause, and planned to set up collection tables at events like the Boys Lacrosse Basket Bingo, on March 14 the Junior Class spaghetti dinner on March 19, and other sporting and school events.

They will still be collecting money at lunch, and hope that the student body will recognize their cause and donate. People who donate more than a dollar are able to write their name on a donation sheet, and the sheets are put on display to recognize their generosity.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Donations to the organization will not only fund research to find the cure, but it will provide financial assistance to patients and improve the safety of today’s treatments.
