Waddling their way into the end of the school year; D.U.C.K.S. club wraps up with annual yard sale

After having a rough start last year the D.U.C.K.S. club has flourished, and plans to end their successful year of hard work and community-minded charity with their final field trip, and their annual yard sale.

The D.U.C.K.S. club visited Perry Point VA Medical Center on April 15 to visit the Veterans receiving treatment there. Club members went room to room, spending time with the Veterans and giving out hand-made cards and coupons for the canteen store, where patients can buy items like coke, candy bars, or other treats.

“It’s important that we continue to raise funds not only for Mason Dixon, but for other places like Perry Point, the Highlands Senior Center, and our club scholarship fund,” said Fellenbaum.

The annual yard sale will be held on Saturday, May 10 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will take place in the NH parking lot. The event is scheduled on the same day as North Harford Elementary School’s Spring Fair, the NRAS Spring Plant and Flower Sale, and Opening Day for recreational sports. Club President Kristen Zdon expects that the quadruple-threat of events will bring in tons of prospective customers.

“I expect the yard sale will be a continued success. I think that the community expects it now,” said D.U.C.K.S. club advisor Mrs. Christine Fellenbaum.

The D.U.C.K.S. club is also teaming up with the National Honors Society. NHS members can earn points by arriving to help set up and clean up for the event.

“It’s bittersweet for me, because this is the first year I won’t be able to attend the yard sale,” said Fellenbaum. “But it’ll go well.”

“I feel like it is everyone’s duty to help in the community, but being in one of these clubs allows you to do this with people who care as much as you do,” said junior D.U.C.K.S. club and NHS member Drew Vinyard. “We have also donated to help kids through the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, donated cans to Mason Dixon, and given presents to families at Christmas. We do a lot to help, but there’s always more we can do.
To sign up for a spot at the yard sale, call (410) 452-8271, or email [email protected]. While spaces are free, participants must bring in a minimum of five canned goods or personal care items to be collected for Mason Dixon. Tables and and chairs can be rented for five dollars.
