Pancreatic cancer takes another person from this earth, Alex Trebek, “Jeopardy!” s show host since 1984, died this past Sunday. Producer’s of the show are eager to replace Trebek after his 37-season legacy, Jeopardy! will never be the same.

When Trebek was diagnosed with cancer, he chose to stay optimistic. “He had a swing in his backyard that he loved. He actually rebuilt it earlier this year. He was very handy. I don’t know if a lot of people know that,” his producer Mike Richards told Today. Regardless of what he was losing, and the legacy he was leaving behind, he was comfortable. Which shows how great of a person and host he was.

Vox says that there will be one final episode with Trebek called final time on Christmas. As for Trebek’s replacement, no timeline has been set. According to oddsmakers, Ken Jennings is the top candidate to take Trebek’s place in future seasons.

Along with Jennings there are mentions about Alex Faust. Trebek had stated he “hoped Faust would be considered as his replacement” if he went. Some other candidates include, George Stephanopoulos, an ABC News Chief anchor, LeVar Burton, a former ‘Star Trek’ star, and Laura Coates, a legal analyst for CNN. All were suggested and or mentioned by Trebek himself. There are many candidates for the spot, but none will reach the bar Trebek set.

Regardless of the promising candidates, how could someone possibly replace Trebek after 4 decades? Without him as the host, ‘Jeopardy!’ will never be the same. “Just months after Trebek disclosed his Stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis, half of those surveyed last July said they couldn’t imagine watching “Jeopardy!” without him as the host,” states reporter Elaine Low of ‘Variety’.

Jeopardy!’ will continue to attempt to charm its viewers with a replacement sometime after Christmas. Jennings seems to be the best choice; he was crowned the champion of the “Jeopardy! Greatest of All Time” tournament after all. But Jennings had this to say soon after, “The win was great. It is a great punctuation mark, and I absolutely mean what I said about not wanting to play past my prime. And at some point, Alex is going to retire, I assume, and it just wouldn’t feel right to play with a different host. It would be like cheating on Alex. I think this is a perfect time to go out on top.”

Hollywood and former contestants had taken to Social Media to say goodbye to Trebek. According to Ellise Shafer of ‘Variety’, “Musician John Legend honored Trebek, writing: “I was obsessed with Jeopardy as a nerdy kid growing up in Ohio. I’ve loved and revered Alex Trebek since I can remember. What an iconic career.” Many loved and adored Trebek, to have him replaced is not right.
