Every year, students look forward to prom as one of the biggest nights of high school. It’s supposed to be memorable, creative, and something we’ll talk about long after graduation. But somehow, the themes we end up with feel like they’re on repeat. This year’s theme–Masquerade–is a perfect example. While it sounds elegant at first, it’s also one of the most overused prom themes out there.
Masquerade themes have been done so many times that they’ve started to lose what once made them interesting. The masks, the dark colors, the dramatic decorations, they might look cool, but they’re also predictable. Instead of feeling exciting or fresh, it feels like we’re just recreating the same prom that hundreds of other schools have already had. When something is supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime high school event, it shouldn’t feel like a copy-and-paste tradition.
But the problem is that most students don’t really follow the theme anyway. When the theme is something common like Masquerade, people usually just show up in normal prom outfits and ignore it. The theme ends up only showing in the decorations, not in how people actually participate.
Maybe the reason for that is because the themes aren’t very exciting or original. Now it is understandable the school has budgets but if prom had a more creative and unique theme, students might actually want to take part in it. Imagine walking into a prom with a theme like Retro Futurism, where the decorations mix vintage 1950s style with futuristic neon designs. Or a Roaring 20s Speakeasy, where everyone dresses in Gatsby-style fashion and the music fits the vibe? Even something playful like Carnival Night or Hollywood Red Carpet would make prom feel like a real experience instead of just another decorated dance.
Themes matter because they help create the atmosphere for the night. When the theme is unique, it gives people more freedom to be creative with outfits, decorations, and photos. It also makes the event feel more personal to the students who are actually attending it.
Prom should feel special, not recycled. Instead of relying on the same themes every year, schools should take more risks and ask students what they actually want. A little creativity could turn prom from a predictable dance into something unforgettable.
If prom is supposed to celebrate the end of high school, then maybe it’s time we stopped hiding behind the same old masks and started choosing themes that truly stand out.
