New Harry Potter series rumored; Fans weigh in

SUMMER GRACE, Reporter

Recently, there have been many rumors about a new Harry Potter series in early development on HBO Max.

The Hollywood Reporter states that executives are in the very early stages of creating the series and have not hired “writers or talent yet.” The goal of the series would be to “bring the beloved property to television,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The new show is currently in the “early development stage”, according to Variety. If the production process moves quickly, fans are expected to see a pilot episode by early 2022, although late 2022 or even early 2023 are a lot more likely.

According to Inverse, “no writers are attached to the series yet, so no actors are either.” The originally cast members of the Harry Potter films may reprise their roles in the series. Their interest will be determined by the show’s storyline and their own desire to return to the universe,

“I’m definitely excited for something like that to happen. I am definitely looking forward to it,” shares junior Madison Winn. She says she would prefer to see the original cast appear in this show.

However, sources such as Vox don’t think the original cast of the Harry Potter movies will return to star in another series. In an interview, Tom Felton who played Draco Malfoy, has stated that he does not believe the original cast would reunite on screen.

Even though there has been tons of excitement towards the new show, some fans think it’s better to leave the franchise as it is. There have been many rumors regarding author JK Rowling becoming progressively anti-trans. In the summer of 2020, Rowling released a long section on her website outlining her “fears” of “trans activism,” according to Think.

“The creators said if they were to create another movie, they wouldn’t want her involvement and I think that’s appropriate considering what she said and considering their views on the topic,” shares junior Elaina Huffman.

She doesn’t think the creators of the new show would want to begin a new series and give JKR all the credit “despite her writing the books.”

“If they are just going to butt heads about how they don’t see eye to eye then they shouldn’t be involved in one another’s affairs if there’s a chance of another movie/reunion in the future,” explains Huffman. However, if a new show is developing, Winn thinks that it should be about Harry Potter’s kids and their time at Hogwarts.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. and HBO Max stated that “there are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform,” although multiple sources have allegedly stated that the show is definitely being developed.

Some sources, such as ScreenRant, think the bar is too high for a new show. Because the Harry Potter franchise is so loved, the fans will be “notoriously unforgiving with revived worlds,” ScreenRant says.
