Oscars Overview: Here’s who won what

      The annual Academy Awards were presented on Sunday, April 25, 2021, to award movies released in 2020. This was the 93rd Academy Awards, making it the ninth decade to hold the ceremony. The winners of the night are announced.

     The actor taking the award for leading role was Anthony Hopkins for his performance in The Father. The nominees in the category were Riz Ahmed’s Sound of Metal, Chadwick Boseman’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Gary Oldman’s Mank, and Steven Yeun’s Minari.

     The actress awarded for her leading role in a film was Frances McDormand in Nomadland. The actresses nominated were Viola Davis’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Andra Day The United States vs Billie Holiday, Vanessa Kirby’s Pieces of a Women, Carey Mulligans’ Promising Young Women. 

     Senior Ben Ewers watched this year’s Oscars because he “loves to watch award shows and seeing all the fashion.” Ewers was mostly excited because Andra Day and Carey Mulligan were both nominated for Actress in a Leading Role.

     Daniel Kaluuya won the award for Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in Judas and the Black Messiah. The actress Yuh-jung Youn won Actress in a Supporting Role for Minari. Ewers favorite speech was from Yuh-jung Youn because it was “so cute and funny.”

     Disney’s Soul took the title for Animated Feature Film directed by Pete Doctor and Dana Murray. Disney’s Onward was also nominated for the category, as well as Over the Moon, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: FARMAGEDDON, and Wolfwalkers.

     The award for directing was won by Nomadland’s Chloé Zhao. Nominees were as follows: Another Round’s Thomas Vinterburg, Mank’s David Fincher, Minari’s Lee Isaac Chung, and Promising Young Women’s Emerald Fennell.

     The Documentary (Feature) award was won by My Octopus Teacher, directed by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed about the filmmaker Craig Foster. The Documentary (Short Subject) was won by Colette, directed by Anthony Giacchino and Alice Doyard.

     Music (Original Score) was awarded to the writers, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste, of Disney’s Soul. Other Original Scores nominated for the category were Da 5 Bloods by Terence Blanchard, Mank by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Minari Emile Mosseri, News of the World by James Newton Howard.

     Nominated for best Sound was Greyhound, Sounds of Metal, Mank, News of the world, and Soul. The winner of the category was Sounds of Metal by Nicolas Becker, Jaime Baksht, Michellee Couttolenc, Carlos Cortés and Phillip Bladh.

     The category of Short Film was won by Two Distant Strangers by Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe for live action. The Short Film winner of animated film was If Anything Happens I Love You by Will McCormack and Michael Govi. 

     Production Design was won by Mank with Production Design by Donald Graham Burt and Set Decoration by Jan Pascale. Makeup and Hairstyling awarded to Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom by Sergio Lopez-Rivera, Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson. 

     Finally, for Best Picture, the nominees included The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Nomadland, Mank, Minari, Promising Young Women, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of Chicago 7. The nominee to take home the award was Nomadland with Frances McDormand, Peter Spears, Mollye Asher, Dan Janvey and Chloé Zhao, the producers.
