Girl’s lacrosse springs into action; Athletes excited about sports starting again

Recently, spring sports have started back up again. Many students who participate in spring sports, such as lacrosse, have given their feedback on how everything is going so far. Athletes and coaches share their thoughts.

Girls lacrosse coach Patricia Murdy says, “I enjoy getting to know the girls and helping them grow and develop their skills over the years. I enjoy watching players successfully apply what they are taught at practice which helps develop their abilities to play in college and the life lessons learned along the way.”

Murdy mentions, “It has been tough after not having a season last year due to covid. The Seniors on Varsity have really stepped up to bridge the gap created and have helped build on their strengths.” She adds, “They lead by example and we appreciate our time on the field because we all know anything can happen due to Covid.”

Senior and varsity captain Lauryn Warfield says, “I still love playing lacrosse, even with being restricted with masks, it’s still the same.” She adds, “We are still able to play the same game even though we aren’t necessarily allowed to do pregame things with the team or have any additional team bonding activities.”

With covid restrictions in place, slight changes have had to be made to help protect coaches and players from the virus, “we now have limited practices, we used to practice a lot longer than the HCPS rules of an hour and a half, [and] we have less time to warm up for games” Warfield mentions. She adds, “the announcements for games are completely different because we can’t technically touch hands, and our stick check is now different.”

Senior Emma Hopkins states, “I like playing lacrosse even with covid restrictions [since] it allows me to play lacrosse with my teammates and friends which is better than last year not playing at all!” Hopkins says that other than wearing masks, “we have to social distance, and we can’t shake hands.”

The varsity team has had 4 games so far this season. They have competed against C. Milton Wright, Bel Air, Edgewood, and Fallston High School. The team has been close to winning most of their game, losing by only 1-2 goals. Murdy mentions, “We lost to CMW 15-17, Bel Air 6-8, and Fallston in triple overtime 8-9. We beat Edgewood 18-0.”

The team has gotten stronger according to Murdy, “The girls have been back and forth scoring in all three losses and each game has worked hard to capitalize on missed offensive opportunities.  Each game they are getting better and stronger as a team.”

Murdy says, “So far the JV [junior varsity team] was quarantined the day of their first game. So they were unable to play any games yet. They will return back to practice on Thursday April 22 and play their first game against Perryville on Thursday April 29.”
